The crease rules are intended to give the GK added protection while in the act of making a save or gaining possession of the ball in the crease.

What can the goalkeeper do in the crease to stop a shot?
Can they bat the ball wit their free hand?
Can they kick the ball?
Can they catch the ball with their free hands?
Can a offensive player on the attacking team make contact with their stick inside the crease?
Can an offensive team make contact with their crosse if the goalie is in the crease but the ball is possessed by the goalie and is outside of the crease? Can they make contact with the stick if the ball is clamped outside the crease?

Can the GK catch the ball with his hand or pick it up off the ground while in the crease? No, this should be called as “illegal touching of the ball” and possession awarded to the offensive team laterally outside the box.

Defenders can not substitute for a goalie if the goalie is outside the crease to protect a shot? Penalty, illegal equipment 1 minute non-releasable. Should stop play immediately unless a shot is in flight.

Class Question

Can an offensive player body check a defender in the crease? While not likely this has happened while a defender was leaving the crease and still had one foot on the crease line. Since only the GK gets crease protections an offensive player can body check a defender back into the crease to keep the 4-second crease count going. The more common situation is an offensive player stick checking the defender while he is in the crease, which is perfectly legal so long as the offensive player does not touch the crease with his body.

Offensive Crease Prohibitions

Class Question

Player may not be in the opponent’s crease at any time (live ball)
Player is in the crease when any body part is in the crease or on the line including glove holding stick
Player may not “deliberately leave his feet by diving or jumping” on a shot
Player may not reach into the crease and check the GK’s stick or body. This includes an attackman’s stick on his shot

What I think you will see most is an attacking offensivve player stepping on the crease before or after he shoots. Or someone checked into the crease either legally or illegally.

Should the officials flag the offensive player for being in the crease? No, this is a turnover or a play-on. The only time a crease violation is a flag down is if he runs through the crease while the defense has possession outside of the crease.
