Peer Editing Activity

  • The following activity is meant to give each editor a chance to look for: Grammar and Spelling, Organization, Transitions and Formatting, and Content.
  • You will spend time editing for each of these 4 elements, with 30 seconds in between to switch papers and read the new slide.
  • The time will be monitored closely, so you must switch papers immediately when the time is up- finished or not!

If you are using an online tool like Google Drive, Use the ‘comment’ feature or ‘suggesting’ mode. Both are located at the top-right of the screen.

Grammar and Spelling

  1. sp, gr, awk, ?, run-on, <,>, (period)
  2. Do not cross-out. Circle any errors.
  3. Underline capitalization errors
  4. If you’re not sure if there is an error, circle and question mark it.

Organization

  1. Introduction: identify hook, thesis, and main points
  2. Body: identify main points, topic sentences, summary, and transition
  3. Conclusion: label thesis and main points

If any of the following elements are missing, label it on the essay:

Synthesis/Evidence

  • Is there evidence synthesized in each body paragraph?
  • In-text Citation. Do we know where the evidence has been synthesized from?
    • Possible items to look for:
      • Author’s last name,
      • page #s, titles,
      • (things written in parenthesis),
      • “things written in quotation marks”
  • If using an online tool like Google Drive, Use the ‘comment’ button or ‘suggestion’ mode. both are located at the top-right of the screen.
  • You can also use suggesting mode to make changes directly on the document.

Transition and Formatting

  1. Does each transition introduce the next main point?
  2. If transitions are not present, let the writer know. You may need to look at the opening sentence of the next paragraph to see how effective the transition is.
  3. Is the entire paper double-spaced (except for the heading)?

Content & Compliment

  • Does anything sound strange? Make suggestions in the margins. Even if you are not sure, circling the word or words and writing a question mark lets the writer know to take a look at it.
  • Compliments. Write your name on the back of the Paper and give at least two compliments on any part of it.

  • For the complement section, leave a single comment at the end with your thoughts.
