Introduction

In this lesson, you will discuss the tools employers use to hire people, including job interviews. You’ll explore techniques that can help you stand out from other candidates. You will analyze the job interviews of others to identify the techniques they used. Eventually, you will form a group and practice interviewing one another using some of the techniques showcased in this lesson. Learning how to conduct successful job interviews while you're younger will help prepare you to "win the job" you want in the future.

THINK ABOUT WHAT EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR

Many employers look for people with specific skills or attitudes to fill positions in their business. They often make these decisions based on three things;

    • Your cover letter
    • Your resume
    • Your interview

In this particular lesson we are going to focus on what it takes to stand out during a job interview.

THINK ABOUT WHAT EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR

An interview allows a potential employer to ask you specific questions about your:

    • Experience,
    • Strengths and weaknesses,
    • Reasons for wanting to work for their company, and
    • Any other information they feel is relevant.

They may also assess you on your:

    • Appearance,
    • Demeanor, and
    • Enthusiasm for the job.

The interview is often the greatest factor in whether people get a position or not.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE INTERVIEW?

CONNECT INTERVIEW SCENARIO

Team-up with two other students to practice your interviewing skills.

    • One student will conduct the interview.
    • One student will be interviewed.
    • One student will observe the interview and take notes about the techniques being used by the person being interviewed.

Each of you will have the opportunity to play all three roles.

CONNECT INTERVIEW SCENARIO

Interview Protocol

    • Enter and greet one another. Sit down.
    • The interviewer will begin with a greeting type of question like, “How are you doing today?” and the interviewee will respond.
    • The interviewer will then begin to ask the first of their three questions.
    • The observer will be using the list from earlier in the lesson to see if the interviewee is using any of the suggested techniques.

CONNECT INTERVIEW SCENARIO

Interview Review Protocol

After the first interview is complete, take about two minutes to discuss the interview.

Interviewee: Begin by critiquing your own performance. Were you satisfied with what you said? Would you change anything if given the chance?

Interviewer: Share what you thought the interviewee did well. Provide specific examples.

Observer: Discuss what techniques the interviewee used from the list.

Once the review is done, everyone switches roles, and a new interview is conducted.
