Night had descended when Rātā arrived, and the moon cast a pale light through the branches of the trees. He hid himself in the bushes and waited. The tōtara log lay where it had been felled, amid wood chips, crushed leaves and heaps of broken branches. Then suddenly the air was filled with the hum of insects and the flapping wings. Myriads of birds, butterflies, moths and beetles blotted out the thick bush as they descended upon the fallen tree. Like a great giant rising from the sleep the tōtara log was lifted back into position and every branch, leaf and wood chip attached to its former place.

Rātā shivered in awe at the spectacle of the tree standing again resplendent in the verdancy of the forest as the last of the birds and insects winged away into the darkness. Only then did he realise that he had not performed the rituals to Tāne. He slept among the giant roots of the tōtara that night, wishing he did not need to fell such a magnificent tree, and the next day he rose early. As the first red lights of the approaching dawn touched the uppermost tips of the tōtara tree he recited a long chant of invocation to the god Tāne.
