Celebration of contributions to “Midweek Wayfarers” Walking club

👏 Everyone nominated is a ‘winner’ and voted for by their fellow members

👏 Not all nominees or winners are here today.

👏Unfortunately we could only afford one ‘12 carat solid gold medal’ per category!!!!!!!!

👏 Some nominations are rather ’tongue in cheek’

👏 Its intended to be a fun event as well as recognising members contributions.

Map Reading: Nominations

  • Terry Brown
  • The Tuesday Central Group
  • Richard Monday Group

24 of 45

Terry Brown

  • On one exceptional occasion on 10th Feb this year, the planned walk leader notified us that he had a medical emergency so with just 24 hours notice, Terry stepped in and planned a walk from the advertised starting point even though he wasn’t familiar with the area. The group were warned at the start that the walk was taken off a map but all were happy to go along. Not only did Terry save the day, the walk was “smashing” and all enjoyed it despite the weather

25 of 45

The Tuesday Central Group

  • The walk was from East Bierley on the 10th Feb 2026.
  • This one “map reading” (see photo of in a wet field with one member (John Price) expressing … well ….what? The group are looking at a map & GPS.
  • 1.Gosh this is the footpath.
  • 2.Do we really go across here?
  • 3.Well yes. (except the photographer who noticed the stile was a little further to the left of the gate and went round, missing the mud!

26 of 45

The Monday group

  • This wasn't so much Richard’s map reading as his route planning, directions and tendency to start fast.
  • On this walk Richard managed to lose 50% of his group within the first 400 yards!
  • Richard explained we follow the stream to the main road
  • Richard and 5 others went over the first style towards the road half a mile ahead.
  • The other 6 turned right over a bridge straight onto the main road.
  • It was 5 minutes before he realised he had lost his flock!

Martin Morman

  • A salvaged walk.
  • If ever there was a walk of 2 halves this, was it. This was certainly a walk of 2 halves as they say in football.
  • The morning was a delightful stroll in warm sunny weather from Martin’s house to a lovely lunch spot by a stream.
  • The afternoon was a hard yomp in deep heather in pouring rain and bitterly cold. It seemed to go on forever.
  • All was salvaged by tea / coffee and cakes by a nice warm wood burner.
  • Everyone lived happily ever after!

Terry Brown

  • In addition to leading walks regularly, Terry is always willing to step in to lead a walk if, on the odd occasion, we are stuck for a leader. This is a great help in making sure we can have a walk every week.

39 of 45

Colin Jarvis

  • Colin set up a What’s App group for our Tues (Central) 5 milers group after the Web site was closed down. This gave those who were not keen on setting up google sheets/Meet Up or who had to go to the library to use a computer, access to our walks each week.
  • He announces the next walk on the Thurs or Fri before the Tues walk.
  • He also has made it clear that the group is purely for information on walks and that texts should not be sent outside 9am to 9pm. He polices the group with a friendly chat if a text about other subjects are accidently sent.
