Opening Process

-Choose a driving school to complete your drivers education

-You are eligible to take drivers education when you are 15 years and 9 months old, so make sure to sign up as soon as possible.

-This consists of 30 hours of driving instruction

-At the end of this, you must take a test to certify that you have graduated from the school.

RMV Applications

-After completing your 30 hours of drivers education and have reached the age of 16, you are eligible to get your permit.

-To do this, go the RMV Website

-Click on “start your application online”

-At the end of the application, you will be asked to make an appointment to go to the RMV, where you will have your picture taken and where you will take your permit test.

Permit + License

  • If you have passed your permit test, congratulations! You can now start working towards your full license.
  • First, choose the school you would like to continue with (links on slide 1)
  • Sign up for lessons. Timing is difficult sometimes but you have as much time as you need to complete 18 hours of total lessons (12 hours driving and 6 hours observing).
  • Once you have completed your 18 hours and have reached the age of at least 16 and ½, you can take your road test.
    • Tip: Sign up for a road test before you have finished your lessons, as they are usually backed up about 1 month.
  • Make sure to check your email for any updates, as testing dates may be moved.

License + JOL

  • If you have passed your drivers test, congratulations! If not, you are able to try as many times as necessary as long as you pay the 35 dollar fee.
  • With your JOL, you are able to drive all by yourself, with some exceptions
    • You cannot drive anybody who isn’t an immediate family member and under 18
    • You cannot drive between the hours of 12:30 am and 5:00 am.
  • Remember, your JOL lasts for 6 months, so 6 months after receiving it you have no restrictions.
  • You are also able to get a WHS parking pass after having your JOL for 3 months or more.
