Activation

Here’s a scenario I’d like you to think about:

It’s summertime and your family has decided to go on a week-long camping trip to the Adirondacks! You’re excited to go camping and hiking but also know that you’ll miss your friends. It’s okay though because you can just call or text them to keep up on everything that’s going on at home with them while you’re gone… or can you? As you get in the car you start to think about all the things you won’t be able to do without the use of technology while camping that you typically do on an average day. Then you think “This is actually the way people used to live?”

Reflect on how this would change your life by writing down at least 5 things that you do on an average day that you may not be able to do if you were in this situation.

  • Your group will rotate through the stations with sticky notes to provide feedback on other groups ideas.
  • Sticky notes feedback can be:
    • something your group likes
    • a thought or addition
    • a question you have for that group.
  • You will have (2) minutes at each station.
  • You will end at station where you should take time to read the feedback stickies left for you.

Extension Activity

Create and Build

The situation: A student has a genetic disorder that they were born with called Brachydactyly which leads to someone’s fingers being much shorter than average as compared with the general size of their body.

Your task:

  • Create, draw, program, or build a keyboard that would help make using a keyboard easier for this person.
  • Your team should brainstorm ideas first, then embark on the task.

Reflection: When you are finished you will need to answer the following questions.

  • What ideas did you initially come up with before settling on your design?
  • How will your keyboard specifically help this person?
  • If you had to pitch your idea to a company like Logitech, what would be your top 3 selling points?
