Red Winter is a game in which the player takes control of Valek Mikhailov: A Russian man who was taken at the age of ten from his family home in New Russia. He soon finds himself in the New Russian Army along side his squad mates, Private Baldrik, Private Vladimir, Lieutenant Dmitri and Captain Alexsi.

Working his way through the ranks and uncovering a plot to overthrow Tsar Nicholas II that was concocted from none other than the Tsar’s right hand man Rasputin.

This scene takes place during a mission where Valek and his squad has been sent to investigate a subterranean bunker that is being occupied by American forces. During this mission Valek must investigate the purpose of the bunker and will eventually discover communications between the American high command and a mysterious Russian figure.

The Scene Begins

Cutscene 1

  • Camera: Facing vertical, showing Valek, followed by his squad, descending a long ladder, fixed to the interior of a steel access pipe.
  • Valek and the squad prepare to breach the door at the base of the ladder.
  • Valek (almost whispering): 3...2…
  • Camera: Switches to the opposite side of the door.
  • Valek and the squad breach the door.
  • Valek and the squad are met with a small group of armed American soldiers.

SHOOT SOLDIERS

Cutscene 2 (1/2)

  • Camera: Focused on Lieutenant Dmitri and an American soldier.
  • Lt. Dmitri, one of Valek’s squad members has his gun aimed at an American soldier, who has fallen on to the floor.
  • Lt. Dmitri: American scum, pathetic.
  • Lt. Dmitri is about to shoot when Captain Alexsi interjects.
  • Camera: Pans out to show the entire squad sat around on furniture surrounding the American soldier.
  • Cpt. Alexsi: Wait, hold your fire, perhaps the little man can help us?
  • Lt. Dmitri lowers his weapon reluctantly and step back
  • Cpt. Alexsi: What is the purpose of this bunker my friend?.

Cutscene 2 (2/2)

  • The American spits at Captain Alexsi.
  • Cpt. Alexsi: Don’t…make me ask you again!
  • American Soldier: F**ck you, you commie b*****d!

Soldier Spared

  • Valek doesn’t shoot the unarmed soldier.
  • The American soldier reaches for his pistol and Dmitri fires two rounds into his chest walks closer until he is standing over him and fires another round into his head.
  • Cpt. Alexsi: Valek, have a look around, see what you can find.

  • Camera: In the corner of the ceiling looking towards the door where Valek enters.
  • An American Officer is standing in the room with a revolver aimed at Valek.
  • American Officer: Come on pal, you don’t need to do this. Just walk away…
  • Valek: I think we both know I can’t do that…
  • Camera: Switches to the right behind the Officer.
  • There is a hesitation and then the American Officer fires, but Valek is quicker with the trigger, shooting the Officer in the head, narrowly avoiding the Officers shot.

Soldier Barracks (Cutscene) (1/2)

  • Camera: Opposite the door, facing it.
  • Valek overhears soldiers in the barracks and contacts his squad quietly over comms. They arrive and prepare to breach the room.
  • The room falls silent…suddenly bullets come flying through the door towards the squad.
  • Lt. Dmitri: I think they know we’re here, no point keeping quiet now! (laughing).
  • Dmitri pulls the pins on two frag grenades and throws them into the room through the broken door.
  • Camera: Switches to the interior of the room.

Soldier Barracks (Cutscene) (2/2)

  • The grenades detonate, eviscerating the men on the inside and destroying the room and its contents.
  • The room is now inaccessible.

  • Camera: From Valek’s perspective.
  • The door opens, two intelligence Officers are sat at terminals wearing large headphones listening to broadcasts from New Russia and translating them. The room is heavily padded and so the Officers here are unaware of the squad’s presence in the bunker.
  • Private Baldrik and Lieutenant Dmitri stand behind the men and on Captain Alexsi’s signal, cut their throats.
  • Captain Alexsi: Okay, now Valek, I want you to check these terminals for any information you can find that may be useful. The rest of you, with me!
  • Valek: Yes sir.
  • Lt. Dmitri: Try not to break anything ‘durak’.

  • Camera: In the corner of the ceiling looking down on Valek.
  • Valek is reading the text file on the terminal.
  • Valek: Captain! Captain! You need to see this!
  • Cpt. Alexsi: What?! What is it Valek? What have you found?
  • Valek: There’s a traitor, captain. There’s a mole somewhere in the New Russian Government. There are communications logged here about a meeting between the leader of this base and someone from New Russia.
  • Cpt. Alexsi: Keep your voice down, we don’t need the men hearing this. You really believe someone would have turned their back on the Motherland? Don’t be so foolish…

Intelligence Room (Cutscene 2) (2/2)

  • Before Alexsi can respond an alarm starts to sound and red lights begin to flash, there is also a hissing sound that can be heard.
  • Cpt. Alexsi: An infiltration countermeasure! Gas is being pumped in here, we need to get out.
  • Camera: Now looking directly down towards the bottom of the entrance ladder, mirroring the angle that was seen on the squad’s entry.
  • Captain Alexsi and Valek regroup with the squad and head for the exit where they begin their ascent up the ladder. As they reach the top and escape and explosion can be heard and then a flurry of fire appears at the base of the ladder, the gas has ignited and destroyed the entire contents of the base including the communications data.
