The general model of colour psychology relies on six basic principles:

  • Colour can carry a specific meaning.
  • Colour meaning is either based in learned meaning or biologically innate meaning.
  • The perception of a colour causes evaluation automatically by the person perceiving.
  • The evaluation process forces colour-motivated behaviour.
  • Colour usually exerts its influence automatically.
  • Colour meaning and effect has to do with context as well.

  • Colours and emotions are closely linked.
  • Warm colours can evoke different emotions than cool colours and bright colours can create different feelings than muted colours. It all depends on how the psychological effects of colour are being used.
  • Colours can make us feel happy or sad, and they can make us feel hungry or relaxed. These reactions are rooted in psychological effects, biological conditioning and cultural imprinting.
