Media Team Goals

  • Overall Goals - OHYG Staff
    • Teamwork and coordination - vital ingredients of successful journalism.

    • Provide other YG participants with accurate, reliable, and useful information, by publicizing all aspects and program areas of the State Conference.

Role of a Media Team Member

  • Attend daily Media team meetings
  • Work with your team to develop concepts and story ideas within your media area: print, video, photography, or social media. There will be an assignment list for the Media of the things that must be covered, but get creative and come up with additional ideas!
  • Cover all program areas so that the conference at large can learn about what’s going on across the State Assembly.
  • Meet deadlines for your projects to ensure that the editors have time to complete their work.
  • Get all submissions approved by the Media Specialist and Editor in Chief before publication.
  • When not meeting with the Editor, Media members will be working in teams of three on their assignments across the State Assembly or in the Media room.

  • Specialist & Advisors - Trip Floyd, Brynn Drabek, Tom Hering
  • Editor in Chief - Danny Fuller
    • Develops and communicates the overall vision for the Media Team.
    • Holds daily meetings to take attendance and ensure all Media members are organized, have assignments, and understand deadlines.
    • Approves all submissions before publication.
  • Assistant Editor(s)
    • Print
      • Edits all print submissions to ensure they are ready for approval and publication.
      • Designs the overall daily newsletter.
    • Video
      • Edits all video submissions to ensure they are ready for approval and publication.
  • Print Team - Sydney Brown, Avery Smith, Serenity Davila
    • Writes articles and stories about what’s going on at the State Assembly to be included in the daily newsletter.
    • Develops ideas for fun/interesting additions to the daily newsletter.
  • Photographer Team - Natalie Livesay, Ryan Phonchone, Colton Oswalt
    • Takes photos to accompany print publications
    • Takes photos to contribute to the closing slideshow
    • Should cover all areas of the conference.
  • Videography Team - Micah Giorgi, Simon Hering
    • Develop and record the daily news video.
    • Help design the closing slideshow and include video footage.
  • Social Media Team - Caroline Foraker, Emme Milliken, Marie Jackson, Heaven Crowe
    • Develop ideas for daily posts, stories and reels.

State Assembly Prep - Equipment

  • All media members should plan on bringing their own equipment to use. You don’t need to buy new equipment, but you can request to borrow equipment from your school if needed.
  • The OHYG Staff will provide some basic equipment such as ring lights and lapel mics. The OHYG staff also provides access to Canva, our official Media website and our official social media platforms.
  • Examples:
    • Cameras
    • Phones (these can be used for pictures, video and social media)
    • Notebook
    • Other equipment can include: mics, lighting equipment, etc.
    • Laptop/Ipad

State Assembly Prep - Social Media

  • Official OHYG Social Media Available
    • Facebook
    • Instagram (for the daily print newsletter publication and social media)
    • TikTok
  • No new social media or websites should be created by the Media team without express approval from the OHYG staff.

State Assembly Prep - Pre-Assignment

  • Write a short article on your delegation (and include a picture or two if you are able). You can include things like:
    • How many years your delegation has attended State Assembly
    • How many members are attending this year from your delegation
    • Any students on the leadership teams
    • Bill ideas your delegation is bringing
    • How many program areas your delegation is involved in
    • Cool aspects about your school and surrounding community
  • This will go in the first newsletter on Thursday evening to introduce the conference to your delegation.

  • Every Media member will be working on several assignments at the same time. Assignments will be distributed or approved by the Editor in Chief. Plan on giving updates to the Editor with how your assignments are going.

    • Daily Print/Electronic Newsletter on Instagram (Thursday evening)
    • Secretary of State Voting Video (Thursday evening)
    • Town Hall for Youth Governor & Secretary of State (Thursday evening)
    • Town Halls for all other Presiding Officers (Friday Morning)
    • Youth Governor Press Conference (Friday afternoon)
    • Oversight Press Conference (Friday afternoon)
    • Daily Video New Report (Friday evening)
    • Daily Print Newsletter on Instagram (Friday evening)

State Assembly Info - Assignments

  • Additional Opportunities:
    • Social media post introducing candidates

    • Working with Lobbyists to get information on their issues out to the public.
    • Working with the Secretary of State's Office to encourage voting.
    • Bill author interviews or articles on their bills topics.
    • Interview the Supreme Court members to share any news they have and what they do with the conference at large.

    • Take photos during candidate speeches, opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies and Friday evening’s fun time!

State Assembly Info - Deadlines

  • The Editor in Chief will give you deadlines for your assignments.
    • It is important that you meet those deadlines so the editors can complete their job before publication can happen.
    • If you think you need extra time, be sure to speak to the Editor and let them know!
  • Editing
    • The copy editor will be in charge of all editing of print articles, etc. The video editor will be in charge of editing all videos.
    • While they are the last stop before approval from the Editor in Chief, you can help them out by making sure your submissions are done well. Run a spell check on your article, look over your content and play through your videos to check for any issues.
    • The Editor in Chief is responsible for approving all submissions before they are published along with the Media Specialist.

  • Bring a laptop if you can! It’s much easier to work on a laptop than your phone.
  • Get used to talking to people you don’t know. You will be networking with people from all over the state at conference!
  • Bring extra batteries and SD cards for equipment.
  • If you have an SD card reader, bring it!
  • Bring comfortable shoes and a coat.
