Let’s start with the basics: setting clear Key Performance Indicators, or KPIs. KPIs are the specific metrics you choose to track your progress toward your most important business goals. In the context of BNI, some powerful KPIs include the number of referrals you give and receive, the number of 1-2-1 meetings you complete, your revenue or closed business, and your conversion rates on leads or referrals. The key is to pick metrics that are meaningful for your business and that will help you stay focused on the results that matter most.

Once you’ve identified your KPIs, set realistic targets for yourself and your team. These targets should be ambitious enough to motivate you, but also achievable based on your past performance and current resources. For example, if you currently average two referrals per month, set a goal to increase that to three or four. If you’re tracking revenue, aim for a percentage increase over the next quarter. Setting clear, measurable targets gives you something concrete to strive for and helps you break down big goals into manageable steps.

By regularly entering your data, you create a clear record of your activity and results over time. This not only helps you stay accountable, but also makes it easy to spot trends, patterns, and opportunities for improvement. If you prefer another system—like a spreadsheet or CRM—make sure you’re using it consistently and reviewing your numbers on a regular basis.

Regular review is where the magic happens. Set aside time each week or month to look at your numbers, reflect on what’s working, and identify areas for improvement. Are you meeting your targets? Which strategies or activities are producing the best results? Where are you falling short, and what can you do differently? Don’t just look at the numbers in isolation—connect them to your actions and outcomes. For example, if you notice that your referral numbers are up but your conversion rate is down, it might be time to focus on the quality of your referrals or your follow-up process.

Celebrate wins and analyse setbacks

Get feedback from your chapter to identify new opportunities

Celebrating wins is an important part of the process. When you hit a target or achieve a milestone, take time to acknowledge your success and share it with your chapter. Recognition not only boosts your own motivation, but also inspires others to raise their game. At the same time, don’t be afraid to share your challenges or setbacks. BNI is a supportive environment, and your fellow members can offer valuable feedback, fresh perspectives, and creative solutions that you might not have considered on your own.

Asking for feedback is a powerful way to accelerate your improvement. Your chapter is a wealth of experience and insight—tap into it! Share your KPIs and your progress, and ask for input on how you can do even better. Maybe someone has a referral strategy that’s working for them, or a follow-up system that’s helped them boost their conversion rates. By learning from each other, we all get better together.
