In grades K through 2, student mastery toward grade level proficiency in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies will be assessed using four major descriptors. This method of reporting will show your student’s progress toward end-of-year expectations.

Communication

Teachers/Schools will communicate with you about your child’s progress in a variety of ways.

  • Teachers will communicate with families about what standards/skills they are working on through weekly communication such as newsletters and/or ParentSquare.
  • Teachers will send home student work and assessments.
    • Reading and math assessments that are sent home will include a Feedback Form providing parents with information about their student’s performance on the assessed standards. �
  • In grades K (ELA and math) and 1 (ELA only), teachers will send home mid-quarter communication - this is because assessments in these grades are conducted 1:1 or in small groups and are mostly oral rather than written - there is not an actual assessment to send home. �
  • Quarterly, teachers will include high-quality, student specific comments on the Feedback Driven Progress Report that goes home with students. (see next slide)
  • Teachers will use parent-friendly language as often as possible to help families understand any standard-specific language used on the FDPR/work sent home.
  • Teachers will leverage the two parent-teacher conference dates in the annual academic calendar to communicate student progress with parents/guardians.
    • Student-led conferences will be in addition to the two parent-teacher conferences referenced above.

Teacher Comments

On each Feedback Driven Progress Report, there will be important comments that will provide more detailed information about your child’s progress toward the grade-level skills or standards.

Reading Sample Comment:

Your child is starting to understand the main parts of a story. They can usually name who the story is about and where it takes place, especially with some help. They are working on explaining what happens in the story and how the events are connected.

Math Sample Comment:

Your child can identify numbers that are one more or one less than a given two-digit number with support. Your child is working on understanding how to find ten more and ten less using place value concepts. Continued practice will help your child apply these skills independently and with greater accuracy.

  1. What information is used to determine my child’s progress each quarter?
  2. Teachers will gather a variety of evidence to determine progress.
  3. Some of this evidence will come home with your child in their weekly folders.

  • How will I know if my child is making progress toward the end-of-year expectations?
  • Look for a change in the rating (ex. PM to AM) on standards over time
  • Take advantage of parent-teacher conferences in the fall and spring. During conferences, teachers will show you your child’s work as well as the grade level expectation so you can see the end goal as well as your child’s strengths and opportunities for growth.
  • Check weekly folders for evidence of student progress.
  • Reach out to your child’s teacher anytime if you have questions about your child’s progress or ways you can support your child.

  • What happens if my student has an I.E.P.?
  • Students with accommodations will be assessed on grade-level skills and grades should reflect their progress using their accommodations.
  • Please speak to your case manager for more information.

  • How will my student be graded in related arts?
  • Related Arts teachers will use the ratings of Met (M), Approaching Met (AM), or Not Assessed (-) only.

  • How will student learning be celebrated?
  • Celebrations of learning will be ongoing.
  • Celebrations will highlight student growth.
  • Students will celebrate each other cultivating a strong community of learners.
