Symptoms and First Aid

  • Heat Illnesses: occur when the body is unable to control its temperature

  • Symptoms: confusion, loss of consciousness, profuse sweating, seizures, nausea, headaches, dizziness, fainting, cramps

  • First Aid: Call 9-1-1; move the member to a cool area, remove the member’s outer clothing, cool the member with cold water/ice bath, apply to the member’s head, neck, armpits, and groin

Heat Prevention Tips

  • STAY HYDRATED:
  • Drink water and sports drinks containing balanced electrolytes
  • Avoid alcohol and drinks with high caffeine or sugar
  • Begin hydrating 6-8 hours prior to shift

  • Apply active cooling methods – cold packs, wet towels, etc
  • Utilize sunscreen or long sleeves to avoid sun damage
  • Utilize work rest cycles as able
