  • Districts and schools must continue to focus on the holistic needs of the educational community
    • This crisis disproportionately affects our most vulnerable students in terms of their physical and mental health, as well as academically. Equity needs to be a top consideration in local planning efforts, especially as districts and schools make plans to manage an extended closure.
  • At this time, districts and schools must also work to adopt a remote learning model:
    • Nothing can replace the in-person schooling experience, and we should not expect that remote learning can replicate the traditional school day.
    • At the same time, with school closures now extended, districts, schools, and communities have an obligation to engage students in meaningful and productive learning opportunities through an appropriately structured educational program.
    • Remote learning is not synonymous with online learning. Remote learning can take place in a multitude of ways

  • Recommended remote learning model:
    • We recommend that districts support students to engage in meaningful and productive learning for approximately half the length of a regular school day. We expect this learning to take place via a combination of educator-directed learning and student self-directed learning.
    • We strongly recommend that districts and schools focus on reinforcing skills already taught this school year and applying and deepening these skills.
    • New content based in standards allowed
  • Components of a remote learning schedule:
    • Opportunity to connect with one or more educators multiple times per week.
    • Access to multiple hours per day of academic content directed by educators
    • Time each day for physical activity
    • Additional daily time for enrichment activities such as the arts

  • Feedback on student work and grading:
    • To the extent practicable, teachers should provide feedback on student work completed at home. That said, if districts and schools have not already implemented policies regarding credit-bearing courses (determining credit for academic work at home), we strongly recommend that academic content be graded as “credit/no credit”

    • Coordinator and Parent only, or partial time
      • GEN ED AND SPECIAL ED REPORTS NEED TO BE SUBMITTED PRIOR
    • Consent From Parent to Hold Virtually
    • Re-Evals and Initials are too Complex
  • Specific Issues around Teletherapy
    • Solved for OT,PT, Psychologist, Speech, and School Counselors based on recent guidance from their organizations
  • Online Evaluations--Researching Options for Validity and Reliability--Likely will not do this as we can’t complete “comprehensive” evaluation in this environment

Curriculum Leadership Next Steps

(Curriculum Tool)

Department Heads, curriculum leaders and elementary instructional leaders, in lieu of preparation for May data meetings will be asked to:

  • prioritizing power standards for equivalent of one week of instruction broken out over a three week period
  • sharing resources for teachers to meet standards,
  • assisting with the assembly and dissemination of the standards and resources
  • giving teachers in your departments, grade levels the total creative autonomy to execute those standards through activities and assignments as they see fit.

Doing so will allow the district to create a bridge/transition plan for the 2020-2021 school year.

Assignments, Assessments and Grades

  • Do your best to align any common assessments to understand if students are obtaining the standards identified as “essential.”
  • Students should have assignments and receive feedback, how this looks is based on teacher decisions, but we should have some consistent expectation (minimum standard)
  • No tests for grade averages
  • All course grades will be credit/no credit
  • Criteria for assignments should be met/not met
  • Logistics of how to treat terms ¾ and Trimesters ⅔ will be discussed with your building principals early next week
  • Finals will be discussed and addressed with HS staff
  • Elementary staff, the ROSP freezes at March 8 performance and like NHS, we will add the performance up to March 8 + yet to be defined credit/no credit system for the closure period into an end of year ROSP update.
  • Elementary: How to treat grades if we are back on May 4 and if we are back never (no!) will be addressed once we have certainty on our return date.
  • Special Education Progress Reports: Will be filled out based on the March 8th date and student progress up to that time and will be sent out as soon as possible (attorney advice) progress/baseline
