Essay Structure

Glue or tape your essay outline to your notebook. This will be very important this year, as it will help you organize your essays and covers exactly what each essay needs.

4 of 14

Write in an academic style

Academic Writing uses clear, concise, formal, and focused writing. It is structured and backed up by evidence. Academic writing uses domain specific vocabulary and is written in present tense using strong verbs.

Casual Writing uses informal or semi-formal language. It is more conversational and generally not suitable for formal writing assignments. It can be in past or present tense.

Active Voice

Your essay should be written in present tense active voice. This is part of the Core Knowledge Sequence.

Present Tense Verbs - Verbs used to describe an action or state of being that is happening right now.

Avoid using helping verbs in your writing. You can only use TWO per paragraph.

Helping Verbs (state of being verbs) - used with a main verb to help show the main verbs tense, mood, or voice

State of being verbs:

  • am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, have, has, had, do, does, did, shall, will, should, would, may, might, must, can, could

Examples:

NO - The author was foreshadowing the impending dangers. (passive voice)

YES - The author foreshadows the impending dangers. (active voice)

** Add verb practice page to notebook and complete as a class

Write a 4-paragraph essay (following the Kinard essay format) to analyze how a character from Animal Farm demonstrates two different traits throughout the novel using textual evidence.

(We will write the introduction today, the body paragraphs next class, and the conclusion on the third day. You will then have time to edit/revise on the fourth day. The final draft of the essays will be due at the start of class on Monday, 11/7 and Tuesday, 11/8.)

Pink Hook

The hook is the first sentence of your essay. It is an interesting sentence used to “hook” the reader’s attention. It is always about the TOPIC - never about the text.

-A hook will not include character names.

-We no longer use questions or “Have you ever…..” or “Imagine….” type hooks.

-NO questions used as hooks!

**This is a perfect place to include advanced figurative language!

Pink Hook Examples

-All examples are MINE. If you copy them (or almost copy them) it is plagiarism. You can use them to inspire you to write one of your own, but you can not use these.

Cruel. Deceptive. Devious. Just as a wolf in sheeps clothes infiltrates a herd, one person can wreak havoc on a community.

While one might hope that all people have the best of intentions, power has the ability to change a person. Change their personality. Change their disposition. Change their kindness to cruelty.

Just as spring rains bring promise of growth, new leadership and change can bring hope and joy to people. Unfortunately, new leadership does not always bring positive change.
