Four dimensions of Application layer standard

  • Domain layer Applications: Transportation, Healthcare, Smart City, Agriculture, Utilities, Public Safety, Banking and Finance, Education, Home, Manufacturing, and others.
            • Are use case dependent. 2. Closely linked to the regional aspects of the domain 3. need to be driven by India’s requirements & standards with suitable Gap Analysis
  • Application Services Layer is where the specifications of integrated application architecture, data set dictionary, data interaction standards , artificial intelligence, data analytics and interface specifications across multiple application services or domains are included
  • Enabling Technology Services Layer includes specifications for architectures, interfaces of components & services encapsulating many technology options and alternatives that are required to perform several of the standard functions of an ICT based system. Usually application agnostic. Frameworks like cloud, web services, database & remote connectivity
  • 5G Services Layer 5G service classes that covers variety of possible 5G use cases: eMBB - URLLC – mMTC, network slicing dividing available network capacity with customer-centric SLAs application services & domains use these network features through well-defined APIs standardized in various standards forums.

  • Compile a priority list of research areas/services required (Problems to be solved) while keeping a linkages and note of other mission mode projects active in India covering Digital India, Make in India, Swachh Bharat, Smart cities/Villages, Electric and autonomous mobility, Disaster Management, Financial Services, Agriculture and Water, Supercomputing, Security of critical infrastructure etc
  • Enable 5G infrastructure capabilities to experience High speed broadband everywhere, anytime; New services of Smart Automotive: Connected vehicles, Intelligent transport system, V2V/ V2I and e-call; Multi- Media everywhere, virtual presence; Public safety through critical control of remote devices; Robotic surgery; Drones

Adoption of Applications Layer Standards for 5G” -Report

  • Taking some leads and motivation from the 5G HLF ALS report, TSDSI started working to take forward the Standardization part of the report and the related aspects
  • TSDSI set up the ‘Application Layers Standards Task Force’ to suggest a strategy on Way Forward working in collaboration with Standardization Committee of its GC
  • One of the Key recommendation of the task force was to initiate technical work on the ALS and merge the Task Force with Study Group on Solutions & Services (SGSS) which was already working on various Study / Work items related to ALS
  • To broaden the horizon and taking up of work related to various verticals / use-cases a special Working Group under SGSS was created as (Application Layer Standards & AI)
  • The WG also noted the recommendations of TSDSI’s Global SDOs Task Force to implement some of those to take the work done in India for Indian requirements Global SDOs besides motivating the large-scale deployment in India.

Example: Smart Agriculture

  • Objective: Bring the advantages of standardisation to the farmers (especially in developing regions)
    • Ensure the sensors used have a specification that is verified from a soil lab which can be verified “on-the-fly’
    • Setup processes to qualify/ calibrate sensors so that the end-user is not at the mercy of IoT provider/ sensor provider
    • Setup interoperability among sensors and cloud providers to ensure investment by farmers is not wasted owing to potential discontinuity of a solution/ monopoly by some providers
    • The soil test labs to be included in TSDSI partner list - a slight deviation in sensors may have a major impact on the farmer/ citizens lives.
    • A standardization here is essential since impact is upon productivity as well as possible nutrition/ yield
    • Enabling the interoperability between the different use-case "actors" to lower the barrier to onboarding farmers as well as extending the life-cycle, affordability and efficacy of the solution

Soil Test Laboratories are in every state and a harmonization among them may augur well to standardize sensors, analytics back-end and one-M2M based standardized links

  • PPDR would greatly benefit from a common standard across the multiple user agencies like xDRF, State Police, Para-military as well as Indian Railways and such
  • There are diverse standards for each specific use case however a common national standard would bring efficiencies (spectrum), better coordination
  • DCPW influences Indian PPDR specifications along with WPC for spectrum and has to be an essential partner in PPDR standardization
  • The eventual aim is to have an application layer standard that allows interoperability across various end-users and user engagement which is common across the various user agencies also bringing out harmony in spectrum, law enforcement as well as R&R.
    • Eg: This ensures a NDRF team can work with flood rescue team in Kerala or cyclone affected areas in Orissa and same setup can be used for monitoring from a common location or a Fire-Brigade team can work with SDRF or Police force leveraging radio communication and IoT along with field tasks

  • Concerns & Constraints:

    • The infrastructure upgrade is expensive and funds for these end-users is limited
    • Considering the above, TSDSI may work with organizations like DCPW/ WPC and other stake-holders to propose an evolutionary path hand-holding a technical evolution, to gradually move towards a common national standard adoption as well

  • Reference:The TRAI note on Next Generation PPDR dated 4th June 2018 and responses by stakeholders captures it very well.
