THE MUD VOLCANOES OF BUZĂU

The Mud Volcanoes is one of the most fascinating natural attractions in Romania. Even though they look like real volcanoes, they do not erupt lava or fire. Instead, they release cold mud that comes from deep underground. These unusual landforms are in Buzău County, in places called Pâclele Mari and Pâclele Mici. Many people visit them every year because the landscape looks strange, beautiful, and even a bit like the surface of the Moon.

What Are Mud Volcanoes?

Mud volcanoes are small hills or cones made from layers of dried mud. They appear when natural gases from underground rise to the surface and push mud out. This mud is created from water, clay, and minerals. The gas helps the mud bubble, rise, and sometimes splash out, creating small eruptions. Even though they are called “volcanoes,” they are not dangerous like real volcanoes that have hot lava and smoke. Mud volcanoes are cold, slow, and much safer to explore from a distance.

How Do Mud Volcanoes Form

Mud cones slowly grow.

Every eruption adds new layers of mud, building the volcano shape.

The gas pushes the mud to the surface.

When the pressure becomes strong, the mud erupts through small openings.

The gas moves upward and it travels through small cracks in the ground, looking for a way out.

The gas mixes with underground water and clay, thus creating a soft, liquid mud.

What Do the Mud Volcanoes Look Like?

The Mud Volcanoes area is very different from most places in Romania: The soil is grey, cracked, and very dry. Small craters and cones rise from the ground. Some volcanoes bubble gently, while others splash small amounts of mud. Because the mud contains many salts, almost no plants can grow around them, the whole area looking like a desert from another world. When you visit, you can hear small “pops” or bubbling sounds as the gas escapes.

BUZĂU AMBER

Buzău amber is a beautiful material that comes from the Buzău region in Romania. Even though many people think it is a gemstone, it is just old tree resin that became hard over millions of years, which makes it amazing to learn about. A long time ago, huge ancient trees in that area produced sticky resin, and when the resin dripped down and stayed buried in the ground for a very long time, it slowly changed and turned into the shiny amber that people find today.

The color of Buzău amber is usually yellow, orange, or brown, and some pieces are clear while others look cloudy, which makes every single piece different and interesting to look at.
