What is Title I?

Title I is a federally funded program.

 Schools in which children from low-income families make up at least 40 percent of enrollment are eligible to receive Title I funds to operate schoolwide programs that serve all children in the school in order to raise the achievement of the lowest-achieving students.

Where is my school’s report card?

  • Report cards for schools, school divisions, and the commonwealth provide information about student achievement, accountability ratings, attendance, program completion, school safety, teacher quality, and other pertinent topics specific to student achievement.

  • The report card for Rockingham County Public Schools, as well as individual RCPS School Report Cards, may be found on the RCPS website or the Virginia Department of Education website at “Virginia’s School Quality Profiles.” To view the report card for an individual school, select a school division, and then select a school within the division. (Your school will let you know when the newest report card is posted!)

How is Title I money spent?

Title I provides money for:

        • Reading Staff
        • Teaching materials
        • Parent involvement activities
        • Training for teachers
        • Behavior support staff

All RCPS Title I schools have school-wide programs.

This means that Title I money is available to support all RCPS students in Title I schools!

How does Title I help my child?

  • The MAIN goal is to help each child to make improvement and gain confidence in school, not simply passing a test.

  • Small group instruction is provided by a certified teacher in addition to reading and/or math instruction with the classroom teacher.

  • Title I teachers use a wide variety of instructional materials and strategies to help each child improve reading and/or math skills.

  • Behavior support is provided for students in need of extra assistance.

  • Title I schools in RCPS have school-wide Title I programs. School-wide programs allow all students in the Title I school to benefit.

Overview of Literacy Curriculum

Core Knowledge Language Arts/Amplify (CKLA) (K-5)

CKLA is a content-rich literacy curriculum distinguished by robust and sequential knowledge building, as well as systematic foundational skills instruction. CKLA 3–5 consists of original texts systematically and coherently ordered to build broad content knowledge in science, social studies, and the arts. An intentional approach to building knowledge invites students to engage with and make connections across topics not commonly taught in elementary literacy classrooms (e.g., Ancient Greece and the War of 1812 in grade 2). In K–2, high-interest, fully decodable stories advance along with students’ foundational reading skills.

Our School’s Title I Goals

  • Goals from our 2024-2025 Title 1 Plan:
    • By June 2025, the school will meet or exceed the Virginia state averages in reading, math, and science, as measured by the SOL assessments, with a focus on students in grades 3-5.
    • By June 2025, there will be a 20% increase in positive behavior referrals, and a 10% reduction in negative behavior incidents schoolwide, as measured by the school’s behavior tracking system.

***Plan and Goals for 2025-2026 are currently in draft stage

Who is selected for Title I services?

Three things are considered:

    • School performance
    • Teacher observation
    • Assessments

Your child may receive help for several weeks,

several months, or for the entire year depending on progress and the need for assistance.

How can I help my child?

  • Make sure your child comes to school everyday.
  • Establish a homework routine.
  • Talk to your child’s teacher.
  • Support your child’s teacher.
  • Become involved in your child’s education by attending parent meetings and parent & family engagement events.

Read and follow recipes.

Read directions to create a craft.

  • The Title I School Parent Involvement Plan and the Parent/School Compact are in your Title I Parent handbook.
  • The Rockingham County Parent Involvement Policy is available from your school principal or on the RCPS website.
  • These documents outline how the Title I program supports you and your child.
  • Become involved! Ask how YOU can help create your school’s Title I plan and engagement policy!
