AUTHORITARIAN

Parents main objective is to make child completely obedient

        • obedience most important behavior for child to learn
        • expected to respect authority with little or no explanation

  • Likely to use physical punishment when child not “good”
  • Child may not understand why they should act as parents wish
  • May fear parents and not develop self-control

PERMISSIVE

Parents give child almost no guidelines or rules

child should make own decisions about right and wrong

  • May feel child will be unhappy or unloved if limits are set
  • Child may feel lost without guidelines
  • May have trouble getting along with others later in life because never needed to follow rules

DEMOCRATIC

Compromise between the two styles

of parenting

        • set rules but allow child some freedom
        • explain rules that are set to child
        • child may even set some rules and decide punishment

        • Learn self-discipline in positive, encouraging, setting
