Goals of the Session

Participants will:

  • Learn how to use Twitter for multiple purposes including professional development
  • Connect with participants and with professional Twitter groups
  • Develop plans for using Twitter to give students practice with invention, collaboration, research, and conciseness.
  • Develop Twitter-based lessons and/or professional development plans to take home with you.

Why Twitter?

  • Develop a professional, online, social media presence
  • Collaborate & share ideas with educators across the globe
  • Communicate broadly with a variety of professionals and organizations
  • Demonstrate for students the educational value of connecting with others via Twitter as social media
  • Develop a library of resources for future reference by archiving shared resources
  • Follow a conference virtually when you can’t be there in person or to connect w/ others while at conference

Twitter Versus Other Social Media

  • Facebook fosters communicating with those you know
  • Twitter involves meeting others outside your personal circle and making global connections
  • Linkedin serves professional and employment networking needs
  • Instagram, Vine, and comparable sites foster quick sharing of photos and visuals
  • Twitter enables sharing a variety of media (text, hyperlinks, and photos)
  • Twitter enables participation in chats for sharing information with like-minded individuals (e.g., #engchat)

Twitter Vocabulary

Tweeting:

140 characters max (including Twitter handle and any link)

Retweeting:

Sharing a tweet you find valuable to send to your followers

Favoriting:

Marking tweets you are interested in with the star so you can find them later & let tweeter know you like the information--helpful to favorite during a quick stream of tweets

  • Hashtags # Share your message with a group who has a common interest (#engchat)

  • Reply– Respond to someone else’s tweet (will be seen publicly by both your followers)
  • Direct Message- Send a private message to someone on Twitter (caution: don’t click on links in DM--could be spam/hacker)

Suggestions of What to Tweet

  • Take photos & share them on Twitter: professional events, classroom scenes, student projects (tweet box has a place to upload photos, or send photos directly to Twitter via share option on device/app)
  • Share links to articles, resources, websites (include hashtag to reach a wide audience)
  • Ask questions or seek ideas using a hashtag
  • Share information about upcoming conferences & professional events
  • Tweet resources & information while attending conferences
  • Tweet w/ a class hashtag to communicate w/ students

Following: check who you are following; when on another’s profile page, check who that person follows

Followers: those who added you to follow your tweets

Favorites: those tweets you marked by using the star on a tweet to favorite--click & will see list of tweets recently favorited

Lists: once you start creating Lists or Subscribing to Lists, this is how you access them (advanced)--you can check Lists on others’ Profile page

Your assignment

  • Set up a Twitter account
  • If you have an account, help others set up one
  • Upload a photo and write a short bio for your profile
  • Send a few tweets to set up a tweet stream
  • Follow participants at the workshop
  • Gain some followers from workshop participants
  • Once you have sufficient # of followers, use the search box to find #ncte13 or #engchat and review tweets
  • Favorite some tweets or reply to some tweets found from #ncte13 or #engchat
