If you are behind on the Fiesta Bowl payments, we need you to get caught back up as soon as possible. The boosters are now making regular payments for Hotel, Air Planes, Restaurants, Tickets to Events, etc. for the students making the trip. It is difficult to make your payment for these items for the trip if the funds are not in your account.

Fiesta Bowl Tentative Itinerary

****Please keep in mind that there will most likely be a few minor changes to this itinerary as we move forward. For Instance, there is a Fiesta Bowl Event Performance that the band will be performing at that is not yet listed in this itinerary. This, along with some bus scheduling and other items may cause some minor changes to this itinerary as we get closer to the trip. However at this point, we felt it was important to get you a basic itinerary so you had a ballpark view of what the final one would look like.

Student Drivers

There are a number of band activities where transportation isn’t provided. As many students in the band drive,

students can usually arrange for a ride with another student depending on the drivers age and the limit on how many students

are allowed in the care. Some parents are comfortable with this and some choose to drive their student to and from events.

There are great students in the band, but all students who drive have limited driving experience. Parents should feel comfortable

with whatever decision they make about transporting their child. Regardless of what they tell you, it has been done.

You won’t be the only parent driving your child to and from an event. We leave plenty of time so that there is never a need to rush

or drive too fast. A tardy is not worth the risk of reckless driving. We’re all for making mistakes and learning from them, but not while

driving. Students who do drive are reminded that the mistakes they make that are caused by reckless or casual driving can be catastrophic.

In August of 2012, a student band member from Hilliard Bradley was killed in a car accident. His name was David Phillips

and he was a sophomore who played trumpet. David was a passenger sitting in the front seat of the car, which was driven by another

band student. They were returning to band practice after a break. The car was being driven too fast and the driver lost control.

David was ejected from the car as it flipped and the car landed on top of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other four

people in the car were transported to the hospital.

Students who drive, especially with other students in the car, will drive safely, with care and caution. Passengers will not

distract the driver. There will be no hanging out the windows, driving too fast, or any action that will distract the driver. Students will wear

seat belts. This is as serious as it gets. Those who have been in band a while know that we are flexible and patient. We want someone

to show up in the wrong uniform so that next time, they read the email a little closer. The consequences from making mistakes

generally ensure that the mistake doesn’t happen again. Band is fun and I’m all for having that atmosphere. We don’t dwell on

policies, procedures, punishment, and consequences. But, I am absolute in my requirements for safe driving and being a good

passenger. It is non-negotiable. A split second poor decision or driver distraction and change

someone’s life forever!

This is a portion of our handbook that Mr. Manser added a few years back. Every student we have in the Golden Bear Marching Band is so important, and I thought it would be good to add this important section of our handbook for parents and students to look over once again before we start another exciting season.

Just a quick reminder of laws in place to help our young drivers stay safe

License Restrictions

During the First 12 Months of Holding a License

May not operate a vehicle from midnight - 6 a.m. unless:

Accompanied by a parent or guardian
Driving to or from work with documentation from the employer (see form BMV 2825)
Driving to or from an official school-sponsored event or a religious event with appropriate documentation from the event official (see form BMV 2826)
May not operate a vehicle with more than one non-family member as a passenger unless accompanied by a parent or guardian
Driver and all passengers must wear safety belts
Driver may not use any mobile devices, including phones

A conviction of a traffic offense within the first six months of having a license may result in a parent or guardian having to accompany the driver for six months or until the driver reaches age 17.

After the First 12 Months of Holding a License and Under Age 18

May not operate a vehicle from 1 - 5 a.m. unless:

Accompanied by a parent or guardian
Driving to or from work with documentation from the employer (see form BMV 2825)
Driving to or from an official school-sponsored event or a religious event with appropriate documentation from the event official (see form BMV 2826)
Driver and all passengers must wear safety belts
Driver may not use any mobile devices, including phones

Multiple traffic convictions before the driver’s 18th birthday may result in a license suspension. For alcohol-related convictions, the driver license will be suspended for at least six months (see Ohio Revised Code 4511.19).
