Introduction

  • Starts by saying it is good to remain celibate.
  • Those who marry do so to avoid fornication.
  • In the marriage relationship, each has authority over the other’s body.
  • One is not to deprive the other unless it is agreed for a set period of time.
  • The marriage is not to end in divorce, if so, remain unmarried or be reconciled.
  • In vs. 12-24 he now addresses marriage between believers and unbelievers.

The Standard For Marriage

  • Divorce is forbidden; Remarriage is adultery
    • Matt. 19:3-9; 5:31,32; Rom. 7:2,3; 1 Cor. 7:10,11
  • Remarriage is adultery because it is sexual union outside the marriage bond.
    • Heb. 13:4; Rom. 7:2,3; Matt. 19:3-9; 1 Cor. 7:10,11
  • One exception: For the cause of fornication
    • Matt. 19:9; 5:32

What to Do about Unscriptural Remarriage?

To continue in the relationship is to continue in adultery.Romans 7:2,3; Matthew 19:3-9; 1 Corinthians 7:10,11

Repentance requires ceasing from sin.

Repentance requires fruits of repentance.

Forgiveness does not release lawful obligations and covenants.

  • Jesus gave us the standard.
  • Paul is now making application of that standard
  • He addresses marriages between believers and unbelievers

    • Determined separation by the unbeliever

  • If the unbeliever is content to remain in the marriage they are not to divorce.
  • Becoming a Christian does not change the status of the marriage bond.
  • The marriage bond is still binding between the two. – Gen. 2:24

  • Strong: “To enslave, to bring into bondage, to make a servant.”
  • Thayer: “to make a slave of, reduce to bondage.”

  • The believer must not sacrifice her Christianity to keep the marriage together.

  • Paul said in vs. 10-11 that if there is a separation or divorce:
    • They are to remain unmarried or be reconciled.
  • Vs. 10-11 does not specify the religious conviction of the husband and wife.
    • It applies to all marriages
    • Those where both are believers
    • Those where only one believes.

  • The marriage bond is not taught by Paul to be severed. He teaches that it remains.
  • This does not conflict with Jesus’ stated law (Matt. 19:9)
  • Jesus did not need to expound on hypothetical cases.
  • He didn’t need to. What he said covers all marriages.
  • It is the binding standard all marriages must abide by.
