Sophie Mallows on behalf of the committee

2 of 16

Welcome to the ECO-Actions Club

  • A structure for the organization of events, projects workshops, exchange of material, and participation in sustainability oriented projects outside CERN
  • 2024 Goals: Grow an active and friendly community . Adjust club infrastructure and roles based on experience of last years

Club Overview

  • AGM in in November 19th 2019 with official approval on 10th February 2020
  • Since last year the membership fee is 10 chf
  • In the past, we successfully held online meetings with topical presentations, in-person movie nights, climate fresks, lectures, a hackathon, and have helped ensure the provision plant-based options in the CERN restaurants.
  • A plan to install an eco garden has been postponed although we welcome anyone interested in taking over
  • The onset of official CERN initiatives and our club membership turnover has made several longer term projects difficult to maintain

Environment at CERN

Official CERN Initiatives

Environmental protection at CERN: HSE Unit https://hse.cern/content/hse-env

Objective is conformity with EU, CH regulations, but contributes substantially to environmental awareness and improving sustainability at CERN. One of their best overview events: CERN and the Environment (12-13 October 2022): Overview · Indico

June 2021 -22: CERN’s Year of Environmental Awareness, With some useful talks linked here

Knowledge Transfer: CIPEA Objective is to encourage CERN experts to come up with ideas for environmental applications based on CERN’s technologies, know-how and facilities. https://indico.cern.ch/event/1166768/

Eco Actions CLUB

Supporting personal initiatives

  • Tackling environmental issues requires a top down and bottom up approach at every level
  • Perspectives from Tobias Brosch (Uni. of Geneva) about psychological barriers to behavioural change
  • Key objective of the club is to address some of these barriers encourage each other at a more personal and social level
    • Complement HSE initiatives: encourage uptake of review sustainability reports
    • Motivation: educate via talks, fresks etc, gardens
    • Share experience of personal actions at regular club meetings
    • Facilitate or set up additional infrastructure for reduced consumption ( ride sharing, item sharing)

Start by recognizing psychological barriers to climate change. Slide from an HSE event guest speaker: Behavioral changes for the climate transition: Psychological barriers and levers

Projects Categories (revision proposal)

Events

Raise awareness and educate.

One off or short series but not ongoing.

Each event can be open to members only, CERN personnel or outside.

CERN and Community

Life at CERN: Projects to support HSE making CERN a more eco-friendly place

Service: Projects to identify and work with local regions for a more eco-friendly collaboration

Knowledge Acquisition

Ongoing or long duration where we gain knowledge

Physical projects or research groups

Revision of groups based on experience of how workload manifests. Could merge the last 2

Outlook

In the past, the most success has been with one off events

Meeting more regularly and increasing membership might enable us to maintain longer term projects

Friday lunch times ( every 2 weeks) for short talks and club discussions are proposed

Thursday late afternoon or evenings

We need more active members for the club to survive in 2024 (else we aim to dissolve)

On a positive note, much interest as been expressed over the last 5 months and I am in the process of following up with all messages

We need a CERN staff member on the committee. I am willing to continue as president ( and put more wok in ) but happy with other nominations

Codes of Conduct

Effective and Responsible Communication

Keep all your communication professional, positive, patient and polite. If you are doing something on behalf of the club please check with the committee first

We gain credibility from CERN granting us club status, so use membership and actions as opportunities to make CERN and the ECO Actions Club shine

Inside CERN: be polite and patient when giving feedback or requesting change with CERN infrastructure. Often there are many constraints (financial and structural) that no individual CERN employee can solve in a single action

Outside CERN: be clear actions visible are club based, especially those with a more political nature. Examples: “this talk does not necessarily reflect the views of the organisation”. Or “ Please note this action is on behalf of a CERN club, not t the organisation itself”.

Promote new concepts as solution based assistance for an existing idea/concern of the community rather than complaints or undermining people who may already have the same environmental concerns

13 of 16

Role and environmental Club in context

Complement HSE initiatives: pay attention to their recommendations related to individual sustainability actions, review and provide feedback of their annual environmental reports,.

Social aspect: a club allows a more personal approach to encouraging environmental actions and improvement of standards on and off site.

As a club we can network with other Geneva volunteer organisations, organise talks by guest speakers not specifically related to CERN activities.

Initiate environmental projects on CERN site such as the community garden that cannot be done professional capacity at CERN . Dedicate time to review of global climate and environmental issues, rather than those limited to CERN
