Guidance

Key questions

Context

Previously, students have learned the days of the week, and sequencing events. Next, they will learn to tell the time and draw the hands to the half hour on an analog clock.

  1. Is the hour hand pointing to a number?
  2. Have you started from the middle of the clock face?
  3. Have I started in the centre of the clock?
  4. Is the minute hand pointing to the 12?
  5. Is the hour hand shorter than the minute hand?

Common

misconceptions

Students may confuse the hour and minute hands.

They may also assume the hour time is the one to which the hour hand is the closest.

Support

Support students by working with the hour hand only.

Learning intention

We are learning to tell the time and draw the hands to the hour on an analog clock.

Success criteria

I can

  • Review reading o’clock times
  • Draw the hour hand on a clock showing o’clock times
  • Draw the hour hand and the minute hand on a clock showing o’clock times

Key principles

The I do phase involves the explanation - indicates where a teacher would be explaining a concept.

Moving from I do to We do involves modelling - indicates that the teacher is demonstrating a skill or modelling a process.

Check for Understanding - Questions posed to check whether students have understood and to inform next steps.

You do - Practice - indicates places where students will attempt questions independently.

At the expected level for the lesson; all students should be able to do these questions.

A small increase in difficulty from the expected level, eg larger numbers or a more complex calculation.

Extension - increased difficulty; suitable for a small number of students.

6

Whiteboard response

All students respond to the teacher’s question, showing their responses at the same time.

Non-volunteers

The teacher asks a question, gives wait time, then calls on individual students to respond.

Independent work

Students respond to a prompt in their exercise book or booklet.

Pair share

Students discuss with the person next to them.

Choral response

Students respond orally all together.

Thumbs up, thumbs down

Students indicate whether they agree or disagree with a statement, or whether something is an example or non-example.

Concrete materials

Teacher might choose to illustrate this teaching point using concrete materials.

Class discussion or activity

Students discuss as a class and share ideas

Hands-on activity: What’s the Time Mr Wolf?

Materials: analog clock

Instructions:

  1. One player is selected to be "Mr. Wolf." The other players stand in a line about 10 metres away from Mr. Wolf. The players shout, “What’s the time, Mr. Wolf?”
  2. Instead of saying the time, Mr. Wolf sets the time on an analog clock and shows it to the players. The players move forward the number of steps corresponding to the hour shown on the clock (e.g., if the time is 3:00, they take three steps).

Notes to teacher:

  • Use the traditional rules for What’s the Time Mr Wolf, but instead of saying the time, the Wolf shows the time on an analog clock.
