VERNON PUMPING STATION �IMPROVEMENTS�

  • The Vernon Pumping Station was constructed in the mid 1930’s and is a major component of Baltimore City water distribution system.
  • Water Contract No. 1229, Rehabilitation of Vernon Pumping Station, represents the first comprehensive rehabilitation of this facility since it was first put in service 85 years ago.

  • The Vernon Pumping Station is located to the East of the Jones Falls Expressway and Druid Lake

  • Major components include the complete replacement of the existing pumps and motors, suction, discharge and transmission main piping improvements, a new transmission main tunnel under I-83 and installation of the appropriate emergency generators

Additional improvements include interior and exterior architectural upgrades, replacement of existing valves and valve vaults and site, structural, HVAC, instrumentation and electrical improvements

Existing 48-inch main, 48-inch discharge, as well as 24-inch overflow pipes are nearing 50-year life expectancy mark and will be replaced with a new 72-inch main, 66-inch discharge, and 48-inch overflow which will travel underneath I-83.

The 18’ X 15’ Utility Tunnel beneath I-83 will accommodate:

  • 48” Overflow Drain for Druid Lake
  • 72” Water Main to be connected to Druid Tanks (Future)
  • 66” Water Main- Discharge from Pumping Station
  • Electrical & Communication Duct Banks

Tunneling beneath I-83 may require the use of explosives to remove rock within the tunnel alignment. This would likely occur during nighttime hours and would require the brief stoppage of traffic on I-83.

Construction is expected to start by the end of June or early July of 2024.
