SR 75 @ SR 384 Intersection Improvement

The intersection of SR 75 and SR 384 lies just outside Helen, Georgia, and currently exists as a T-intersection with stop control on the minor road (SR 384). There are right-turn lanes on both northbound SR 75 and westbound SR 384, as well as a left-turn lane on southbound SR 75. The intersection currently experiences a high number of angle crashes despite relatively low traffic density.
Scope of Work
This project involved assessing existing traffic and safety conditions at the intersection of SR 75 and SR 384 and developing three potential improvement alternatives to address operational and crash concerns. Each alternative was evaluated using Level of Service (LOS) analysis and Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) analysis to determine the most efficient and practical solution. A preferred concept was then selected and advanced into a final roadway project plan set in accordance with applicable GDOT and municipal standards and codes.

-Traffic Balance: Handles high volumes of traffic from every approach.
-High ICE Score: Received highest GDOT rating (5.8).

The surrounding community in Helen, Georgia, will benefit from improved safety and traffic operations at the intersection of SR 75 and SR 384. By providing residential, commercial, and tourist traffic with a more efficient and safer intersection, the area is better positioned to support continued economic development. Helen is a rapidly growing community with significant seasonal tourism, and improvements to this major arterial corridor may help accommodate future demand and support ongoing growth.
