Cosmic Ray Detector Experiment

Zach Armstrong

Atomic, Nuclear, Particle Physics Unit: usually October - November

Use to explain “big” detectors, example student design projects

Usually pick experiments that data is read directly from display.

5 of 10

Shuffling the deck Particle cards

Matt Leach

Modern physics unit at the end of senior year physics

Organizing data practice and scientific modeling

Modifications/limitations: Use this as an intro to Standard Model. Take no more that 15 minutes on it.

6 of 10

Hidden Neutrino

Matt Leach

Momentum unit for AP Physics 1

Conservation of momentum

If students struggle with vector addition, do it as a class

Analyzing MINERvA’s muon neutrino data on Arachne

Your name: Hannah Erdevig

Where in year or curriculum: Spring semester

Helps with… Having real data to analyze instead of hypothetical collisions. This would help students conceptualize how particle collision observations are made and conclusions drawn that lead to important discoveries and the evolution of the standard model.

Modifications/limitations: I will probably tell students exactly which entries have usable slices to save time. They will still need to search for the correct collision and best slice to extract data from.

Shuffling the Particle Deck

Taylor Plantt

Early Fall, Unit 2

Justifying the use of pattern recognition and prediction in science, specifically how it relates to the periodic table.

Since this class is a lower level conceptual chemistry and physics class, the exploration into the standard model will have to be quite limited, however it can still be used as parallel content to periodic table trends while also introducing a bigger picture of what types of particles exist

The Case of the Missing Neutrino

Cherie Bornhorst

Conservation of Momentum, Fall Semester

Much like the Mass of Z Boson activity, without having to get into Energy - Mass relationship.

I like that this activity can be used very simply in conservation of momentum, or can be stretched in more complex ways to implement in high energy physics unit.

Using Time Histogram data from Arachne to analyze neutrino and particle interactions

Carlos Rivera

When? January after winter break

Helps with…analyzing graphs and data; learning subatomic particle physics and interactions.
