The Why

Why do we celebrate Black History Month?

We celebrate Black History Month to recognize the suffering that black people have endured and also to recognize the perseverance that Black people have always shown to combat that suffering. Black History Month is a time to show off Black traditions and innovation that may not be discussed any other time of the year.

Activist: Malcom X

What was he known for?

How did he change America?

Malcolm X was a leader and speaker who worked hard to make life better for Black people in America. He believed that everyone should be treated fairly and equally. He encouraged Black people to be proud of who they are and to stand up for their rights.

Malcolm X reshaped the civil rights movement by advocating for Black empowerment, self-defense, and economic independence. His leadership and speeches challenged systemic racism, inspiring the Black Power movement and influencing policies on racial justice, education, and economic equity.

Activist: Huey P. Newton

1. What was He Known For and how did The Black Panther Party Change America?

Huey P. Newton co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966, advocating for Black self-defense, community empowerment, and resistance against police brutality. The party’s free breakfast program for children laid the foundation for the federal WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program, which provides food assistance to low-income families. Through initiatives like health clinics and education programs, Newton and the Panthers left a lasting impact on social justice and community welfare in America.

Lonnie G. Johnson is best known for inventing the Super Soaker, one of the most popular water toys of all time. He is also a NASA engineer and inventor with over 100 patents.   • Who is Michael Jackson and what were his accomplishments?
  • Michael Jackson was a legendary singer, songwriter, and dancer, known as the “King of Pop.” He revolutionized the music industry with his groundbreaking albums including “Thriller” (the best-selling album of all time) Jackson has also won 13 Grammy awards, the most American Music Awards in History and created iconic dance moves such as “The Moonwalk.”
