Her heart slowed down even more. It was a picture of a happy family. Her vision blurred a bit more. More leaves, closer this time. Jordan Dumas- Trying to Escape
I keep trying to get my dad to stop doing this to my mom, but he keeps going and I don't like it. The next time he swings at my mom I am planning to call the police. I get my phone ready and he slaps her right on the arm. I immediately call 911. They asked me what was happening and I told them all of my information and they started to rush over here. I just have to wait until they get here. It felt like hours of my hiding in the closet in the hall, just trying to hide from him. Luckily he didn't find me. As the Ambulance and police showed up I run out the back door and tell them to hurry before my mom can't take it anymore.
They rush in as he swings. They run up to him and get his arms behind his back and handcuff him. My mom, on the other hand, was not doing good. She had a black eye, bruises everywhere, and cuts all over her face. The Ambulance immediately took her to the hospital.
The Human In Us By: Reese Saccoccio
“Stranger?” he asks, in a serious tone.
“Yeah?” I reply.
“What’s it like being outside? I’m not allowed to, yet I crave the warmth. It’s always cold in here,” he asks, quietly.
“Well, do you know what it looks like from a window or something?” I ask, not knowing where to start.
“No, I’m supposed to be in the basement all day tinkering, but I sneak up here. I’m not allowed to leave until father gets back, and even then, the window are closed with a thick fabric that I’m not allowed to move,” he replies, shyly. I sigh. Where do I start?
“Well, there’s this thing called a tree. Wood comes from them. Trees have various types for different purposes, but on the outside, they all look the same sometimes. You have to look closely at the details. Some are rough around the edges, some are smooth, some have patterns and squiggly lines, some have, like, squares, and some are just smooth. The bark, which is the covering of the tree, are different colors, even on some of the same type! The insides are beautiful, so brilliant and rich in color and amazing. They have rings in them to show how old they are! They also have these things called branches, where it’s basically wood that sticks out of it. It can be thin or thick, long or short, but the best part is, is that you can climb them to the very top of the tree and look at the amazing view! The branches carry either tiny branches or leaves. Leaves are the green things. Well, most of the time they’re green, they can be other colors. They are shaped in different ways and can be tall or short. Trees can also be tall or short, I forgot to mention. Well, that’s tree for ya!” I exclaim, happily. There’s a pause. “Hello?”
“They sound beautiful. There must be a picture of one in a book somewhere in this house. Please, continue,” he, almost, begs.
“Okay. Now here’s this thing called a sun…”
Infested by Darkness (And Escaping to Light)
By Olivia Stith
“ I begin to shake and quiver. Hot tears escape my droopy green eyes. The tightness of my ponytail aggravates me, so then I rip the band out of my hair and I know it won’t do any good but chunk it as hard as I can across the room, making my shoulder pop from the force I used. I scoot over to the headboard of my bed and draw my knees to my chest. My head is rapidly spinning.
My mind won’t let go of it. The thought of myself ruining such a great and happy thing. Did they do it because of me?? Why did this have to happen to my family? My happiness, everything I’ve ever loved now broken and lost into an empty abyss.
My sniffles quickly turn into heaving sobs. I felt the exact moment my heart broke, I heard the old red Chevy start up and reverse out of the gravel driveway.
My mom shuffles into the room and embraces me. The smell of strong tobacco and the weak perfume she always tries to cover it up with spill through the door in an aura around her. Her presence makes me feel safe and secure. I feel as though I am no longer lonely in this sad emotionless room. “Honey.” she whispers and she begins to rub my back, memories of used to be happiness now turning into a stinging sharpness in my chest rush over me. My mom stays strong, when even I know the truth, she is more broken than I am. “

We both live with our dad, Andy, in what I call “Tent City.” There’s a lot of tents lined up everywhere. There’s even some RVs. But there’s a really tall fence surrounding the camp. Why you may ask.
