💻 Computer Name / Hostname

🔹 Definition:

  • A computer name (also called a hostname) is the unique identifier assigned to a device on a network. It helps users and systems recognize which computer they are communicating with.
  • 🧠 Think of it like a name tag for each computer. Just as students in a class have unique names, each computer in a network must have a unique name to avoid confusion.

🔹 Purpose of Naming a Computer:

Easier Identification

  • Helps users and administrators quickly find and connect to the right machine.
  • Example: STUDENT-PC01 is easier to understand than DESKTOP-XY12345.

Network Organization

  • When managing many devices, organized naming (like LIB-PC01, OFFICE-PC02) helps with inventory and troubleshooting.

Remote Access

  • When using tools like Remote Desktop or file sharing, a computer name helps connect to the correct device.

Avoids Conflicts

  • Ensures no two devices on the same network have the same name, which could cause errors.
