Introduction

Collage is a student platform built to help university students feel more connected and prepared for life after uni.

For students, the Collage app makes it easy to discover societies and events across universities.

For society execs, it's a single ecosystem to manage members, run events, and grow engagement.

Built by students, for students.

Client Request

Design a system for a college that can handle multiple types of notifications and updates.

Current Limitation

Notifications sent as push notifications to users’ phones, with no way to recover them once missed.

How might we design simple in-app notifications that help students stay updated on society events and important changes without feeling overwhelmed?

Survey Insights

Limitations

Student email (Activate)

  • Mail inbox can become overcrowded
  • Important updates can be buried
  • Not often visited immediately

Social media (e.g. Instagram)

  • Easy for discovery, but sometimes content gets buried
  • Not reliable for last minute reminders and event changes

“Sometimes I miss information of upcoming events, then I would be sad because I cannot attend the event.”

“Managing notifications from multiple clubs is difficult. Messages come from different platforms, often at the same time, and important updates can be missed easily.”

“It can be difficult to browse events. It would be helpful to sort events by upcoming dates and have a feature to save or like clubs and view them in one place.”

Interview Insights

What we learnt from the interview.

Recommendations

  • To combine aspects of Activate & social media to foster learnability.
  • Need user friendly system that centralizes notifications.

Interests

  • Executive prefers social media for event promo and notifications.
  • Values platforms that are reliable, accurate, and convenient.

Pain Points

  • Managing notifications is an inefficient process.
  • Fragmented across multiple platforms and varies per society.
  • E.g. Email, Discord, Instagram, Newsletters

Usability Test Insights

GROUP 01

PROJECT UX

Testing our solution with real users.

Design & Consistency

  • Overall design felt cohesive to other features but had accessibility issues.
  • E.g. timestamp on notification banner and society names were too small.

Content Usefulness

  • Mixed reactions. Some felt info was sufficient on notification banners.
  • Others wished it would be better organised or more concise, such as sort by date or society

Learnability

  • All participants found the notification centre user-friendly to navigate.
  • Layout is straightforward, has good visual hierarchy, and welcoming.
  • Two users liked how the design felt familiar to other apps.
