01

So, how does the boat remain above water?

5 of 41

Buoyancy!

01

makes things float or sink in a fluid, like water. Imagine holding a beach ball underwater—it pops back up, right?

6 of 41

What affects buoyancy?

A ping pong ball VS a golf ball

The object’s weight

Salt water is denser than freshwater. Special: the Dead Sea!

The fluid’s density

Every object is buoyed upwards by a force equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces

7 of 41

What affects buoyancy?

Wider objects let them float, even if they are heavy

The Object's Shape

Larger objects displace more water, so they are more buoyant. Think balloon and small rock!

The Object’s volume

A ping pong ball VS a golf ball

The object’s weight

Salt water is denser than freshwater. Special: the Dead Sea!

The fluid’s density

Every object is buoyed upwards by a force equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces

02

So you don’t capsize during a race (that would be bad)

Which is easier to topple?

What affects stability?

Wider base, more stable

Lower centre of gravity, more stable

Tilt and recovery

Real-life application: the keel

  • When the Boat Leans: The wind pushes the sails, causing the boat to tilt
  • The Keel's Job: The heavy keel acts like a counterweight. When the boat leans, the weight pulls the bottom of the boat back down
  • Righting Moment in Action: The farther the boat tilts, the harder the keel works to pull it back upright
