What is a Circle?

A circle is a closed shape made up of all points that are the same distance from a fixed point.

  • The fixed point is called the centre.
  • All points on the circle are equally distant from the centre.

Centre

The centre is the fixed point in the middle of a circle.

It is usually represented by the letter O.

  • Example: If O is the middle point of a circle, then O is the centre.

Radius

A radius is a line segment joining the centre to any point on the circle.

All radii of a circle are equal.

Diameter

A diameter is a line segment that passes through the centre and joins two points on the circle.

It is the longest chord of a circle.

  • Diameter = 2 × Radius

Chord

A chord is a line segment joining any two points on the circle.

It does not have to pass through the centre.

An arc is a part of the circumference of a circle.

It is a curved portion between two points on the circle.
