The Role of the PTA

All schools are required to have a Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

These organizations:

  • advocate for students and families
  • update parents and families about the school
  • plan and run activities for parents and families

PTAs can support schools in a number of ways, including:

  • hosting parent workshops
  • organizing activities for families—both academic and social
  • raising funds
  • running volunteer events

PS20 PTA

You are an automatic member of the PTA!

The mission of the PS20 PTA is to provide support and resources to benefit the growth of the PS20 community of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and staff; develop parent leadership and cultivate family involvement; strengthen ties with the local community; and procure funding for school support and initiatives, while embracing core principles of sustainability.

The PS20 PTA organizes and funds a number of things, including:

  • Organizing events for PS20 families, from Movie Night to Parents’ Night Out
  • Funds school improvement, e.g. outdoor learning initiatives
  • Runs Mosaic, a daily After School Program for students
  • Manages and funds Green Arts, the school’s integrated art and gardening curriculum
  • Communicates with the parent community via Konstella, PS20 website, social media

TL;DR

Fundraising support is needed more than ever this year!

The PS20 family has grown, and so has the school community’s needs. Your support helps fund essential PTA School Assistants, Arts + Gardening, Student + Teacher support, and so much more.

Every donation helps, large or small. Consider setting up a recurring monthly donation of $20 to PS20!

ps20.org/support-ps20

There are many ways to get involved and support PS20!

There are openings on both the PTA Board and the School Leadership Committee.

We’ll be hosting a PTA Open House & Fair on October 6 at PS20, with morning and evening sessions where you can meet PTA members and learn more about each committee.

BONUS: there will be guided school tours!

School Leadership Team (SLT)

The SLT meets monthly to read, review and discuss the school’s Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP). The CEP is a set of goals individualized for our school based on data collected by the DOE, such as attendance, test scores, etc. The CEP is a living document, meaning it grows and changes throughout the year with the DOE and SLT’s input. When we look at the goals, we work collaboratively to find the best possible ways to meet the goals with our unique community in mind.

Our Team consists of PS20 family members (parents, grandparents, guardians), staff members and Admins. Members are elected for two year positions by their peer group, i.e. parent members are elected by the parent body, during a PTA meeting.

Class Parent Leads

We Need You!

Classroom parent leaders act as a key point of connection between the school, the PTA, and each classroom, helping to provide updates, elevate concerns, and foster a sense of community within each individual class. Each classroom should have at least one class parent lead, and ideally two or more!

What Class Parent Leads Do:

  • Help lead communications within your classroom on Konstella, sharing school or PTA updates and helping to address questions or concerns
  • Support your teacher with extra supplies needed for the students, help organize materials, or fundraise/recruit volunteers for special class activities.
  • Help connect families who might need help with issues such as technology, homework and habits.
  • Help coordinate volunteers for field trips and other parent-led activities, i.e. PTA events
  • Get parents talking, hanging out, laughing and learning, along with your kids everyday.
  • Act as as an evangelist for your class, representing your class at PTA and/or school meetings

Fundraising + Annual Appeal

The PS20 family has grown a lot over the past two years—by 50%!—and the school community’s needs have also grown as we transition past the federal funding surplus of the Covid years and into new NYC DOE budget realities, all while working to make our community’s (big) ambitions a reality!

The PTA currently funds:

  • Essential PTA School Assistants, to support students, teaching staff and administration: Edy Jean, Shawna Bobbitt, Shanyce Mason, Donna Dechirico, Annie Basulto, Lisa Reyes, Hilda Ferrer
  • Gardening & Art Programming, which we hope to extend to as many students in as full-time a manner as possible.
  • Community Events: Movie Night, Octoberfest, and more
  • Teacher and Staff support initiatives, from classroom supplies to appreciation events
