Understanding College Costs

  • Cost of Attendance = COA
  • COA estimate of the total cost of attending a particular college
  • What does this include?

3 of 30

How Financial Aid is Calculated

Cost of Attendance (COA)

- Student Aid Index (SAI)

= Financial Need (FN)

The college will offer you an aid package that will meet part or all of your Financial Need. It usually includes loans.

Without completing the FAFSA, you won’t receive any need-based aid or non-need based

federal gov’t assured student loans.

You also won’t be eligible for merit scholarships that require you to submit your Student Aid Report (SAR).

4 of 30

Student Aid Index (SAI)

an eligibility index number that a college's or career school's financial aid office uses to determine how much federal student aid the student would receive if the student attended the school. This number results from the information that the student provides in their FAFSA® form.

The Student Aid Index replaces the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

NOTE: Unlike the EFC, the SAI won’t be reduced per student if a family has more than one child in college.
