Admission Information

Private & Out-of-State Colleges

19 of 39

PRIVATE & OUT OF STATE COLLEGES

  • Private schools are able to dictate their own entrance requirements, acceptance policies and application deadlines - REVIEW the college’s Undergraduate Admission website!

  • Over 1000 colleges are members of the Common Application. Over 135 colleges are members of the Coalition Application. *If colleges offer both, we recommended Common App! :) Some may require “Direct to Institution” (ie: Boise, ApplyTexas, Georgetown)

  • Most count ALL high school grades including 9th grade & Fall of 12th grade

  • Many use a holistic review - extracurricular activities, portfolios, auditions, interviews, letters of recommendations play a more significant role.

19

20 of 39

PRIVATE AND OUT OF STATE APPLICATION TYPES

20

21 of 39

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

REQUIRED?

21

1. REVIEW requirements directly through the college’s website.

  • DO NOT SOLELY RELY ON THE COMMON APP. Some colleges require letters from a specific subject area (MIT, CalTech, etc.).

2. Request a recommendation in person.

  • Consider teachers who know you well as a learner and as a contributor inside/outside of class.
  • Colleges that DO REQUIRE letters of recommendation typically require 1-2 teacher letters and possibly 1 from a counselor. Additionally, some schools will allow “other recommenders.”

3. Invite teachers and the counselor via the application portal - TP Common App Application Guide

4. Counselor College Application Packet: A printed copy must be submitted IN-PERSON to their counselor by

MONDAY, September 23rd @ 3:30 (found in the Class of 2025 Google Classroom).

  • Teacher Brag Packet: Student should ask a teacher(s) in-person what materials they require and their deadline for turning in the teacher brag packet.

**Do I need to wait for letters of recommendation to be sent before I submit my application? NO, students should submit their application when they are ready to do so!

22 of 39

ADD RECOMMENDERS

Complete FERPA Release

  • Go to My Colleges → Recommenders & FERPA → Complete Release Authorization
  • After the completion of the FERPA, you can invite recommenders.

Add Recommenders to your application.

  • Teachers (core academic subjects) will submit an evaluation form and a letter of recommendation via Common App
  • Counselors will submit the school report, transcript and letter of recommendation (if required)
  • “Other Recommenders” can be an elective teacher, coach, internship supervisor, employer, etc. as long as the college opted in to accept them.

22

Staff emails: @sduhsd.net

NOT: @my.sduhsd.net

23 of 39

23

EVERY SENIOR applying to a 4-year private or out of state college (excluding UCs/CSUs) must submit a

“COLLEGE APPLICATION PACKET”

to their counselor, IN-PERSON, before

3:30 PM on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23rd

24

25

Waive Your Rights? It is student choice. Some colleges will not give as much weight to non-confidential letters. Some staff will not prepare letters if not waived.

Counselors will use the colleges established deadlines. Students should submit their applications when ready to do so - do not wait for your counselor/teacher submissions, they are separate!

If NO Counselor letter is required,

only the FERPA (pages 1-3) needs to be completed and turned in to the counselor.

College Entrance Exams

TEST EMPHASIS AND POLICIES EXPLAINED

28

It is always best to check all of the schools’ websites and college admissions pages you’re planning to apply to so you can be confident which ones, if any, require you to take the ACT or SAT for admission.

Many private colleges and universities have moved to these!

29 of 39

IF COLLEGES DON’T ACCEPT/REQUIRE TEST SCORES…

WHAT ARE THEY CONSIDERING?

You are more than a test score, yay :)!

  • UC: Comprehensive Review
    • Your “Personal Insight Questions” are a valuable tool to highlight your background, interests, circumstances and achievements.

    • Consider the “optional” questions to provide greater context

    • Students’ course selections - Did they EXCEED the minimum a-g course requirements…did they access the highest level of rigor in the subject area for their school?
    • Dual Enrollment in Community College courses - give context- as valuable as AP

    • AP scores = shows interest/strengths in the subject area

29

  • CSU:
    • GPA
    • Exceeding the minimum A-G requirements
  • Private Schools: Holistic Review
    • Curious Learner, Passion, Impact, Open Mind & Thoughtful
    • 2 overall scores used for review
      • Cognitive score (GPA, Rigor, Senior Schedule)
      • Non-Cognitive score (recommendations, involvement, essay)
    • Plenty of opportunities in the application to provide context

TIPS WE SHARED WITH YOUR STUDENT

Take care of yourself

Make time to relax and decompress (beach, coffee with friends, funny movies, playing with your dog).

Strive for healthy balance in your life

You will need time for academics, college applications/scholarships, friends, family, activities, work,

exercise, rest. Don't spread yourself too thin!

Don’t compare yourself to your friends, siblings and peers

You do not have to share your college list or decisions with others. This is a private process; know who

your support system is and access it!

Pace yourself with the application process

Set aside time daily to work on brag packets, applications and essays so you can put your best self

forward. Create a calendar to manage deadlines.

Keep the college admission process in perspective

Believe it or not, this will likely not be the most important decision you ever make. Many colleges could

work for you in different ways. You are not choosing a soulmate for life, but rather the place to start your

higher education.
