The 411 on Scholarships

Scholarships can be applied to expenses associated with attending school (i.e. books and supplies, tuition and fees, miscellaneous living expenses)

Many scholarships can be found in your own community

No scholarship is too small!

Be sure to follow up with the scholarship organization for specific rules and details.

Why are Scholarships Important?

Institutional (from the college/university)
Merit (automatic or competitive/application-based)
Need-Based (FAFSA + CSS Profile)
Special Circumstances (ethnicity, intended major, talent)

National (Coca-Cola, Gates)
Local (LaGrange Rotary, Western Spring Hist. Society, etc)

Framing the Value of Scholarships

Audience Engagement: Say to students, “Raise your hand if you have a part-time job? How much money do you make at that part-time job? Now, raise your hand if I told you could make 250$ an hour just by spending a few hours on a scholarship application.”

If you apply for a $1,000 scholarship and it takes you four hours to complete it, that would mean if you receive that scholarship, you would make $250 per hour! And that’s $1,000 more dollars that you don’t have to worry about coming up with later (out of pocket cost, additional loans, etc.)

Many of you may be thinking to yourself, “Why should I? I’m not the valedictorian so I won’t get a scholarship. I don’t have any athletic abilities, so I won’t get any.” There are scholarships for all kinds of students and for all types of activities.

Scholarships can be extremely vital in helping students afford college. (Give an example of a scholarship you helped a student get that made the difference in them going to college or not.)

There are a number of places you can begin looking for scholarships. Check out the college’s web sites to see what scholarships they have available. Here, you will be able to see what scholarships you may be eligible for and how to apply for them. The college’s financial aid office may be a great resource to check out as well. Your high school counselor should have a listing of local scholarships that may be available to your students. Be sure to utilize this resource as well. Community centers and churches may have private scholarship resources that may not be listed at the school .This is another great resource. The last would be to check with your employer. Sometimes, employers may have scholarships available for their employees and even their employee’s dependents (spouse, children, etc.). This is definitely worth checking in to.
