In today’s lesson we’re going to explore how well different insulators work.

An insulator is a substance that is poor at conducting heat.

  1. Log on to Canvas
  2. Your group will look at 4 substances. Label your rows with your materials’ names.

Choices of substances: cork, wool, cotton, aluminum, newspaper + air (control)

  • Record how the temperature of the hot water* changes over 16 min. Record every 2 minutes. Record the overall temperature change from the starting (0 min.) to finish (16 min.)

*Note to teacher: 50 oC for hot water.

NOTE: Not in class on Friday? Look at the Popcorn CER on Canvas and make sure you have your class data. You will write your Popcorn CER in class later this week after you finish the Insulators CER. Sorry about the order being weird.

Cleaning up

1. Turn the timer to zero. “Reset.” It will go off by itself when it is as zero. Put timer on tray.

2. Take thermometers out and put on tray.

3. Everyone takes their own little glass container out. Take little glass containers out and dump water in sink.

4. Put the glass container back in the tub. Put the tubs back on the tray.
