Set up for Screencastify and YouTube Channel

Setup Screencastify

  • Google Screencastify and go to the website
  • Click in the top right corner the blue Add to Chrome Button
  • A new screen will appear and you have to click the blue add to chrome button again
  • A new box will appear wanting to add it to chrome - Click Add Extension
  • Chrome has now been added to your Chrome Browser

  • You should see an orange arrow at the top right of your screen. This is how you will access screencastify from now on.
  • Click on the orange arrow
  • It will ask you to sign into Google or select a Google account. For this case, you would want to select your school account.
  • After you make your first video, Screencastify will create a folder in your Google Drive called Screencastify. All your videos will be immediately saved in that folder.

  • Set Permission (Camera & Microphone; Drawing & Annotation Tools should be checked)
  • Allow screencastify to read and change data on websites - Allow
  • Screencastify wants to: Use your microphone; use your camera - Allow
  • Introduce Yourself: Educator; Grade School
  • Hooray - You should be ready to record your first video!

Making Your First Video

  • Decide which type of video you plan to record
    • Browser Tap - Only show one tab that you have open
    • Desktop - Show tabs across the bottom and options on the toolbar at the bottom
    • Webcam Only - Will record whatever is in front of the webcam (you talking, etc.)

*It should automatically recognize the microphone and webcam on your device.

**New Laptops and chromebooks should have webcam and microphone. You can purchase external ones if your device does not have one built in.

Making Your First Video - Continued

  • Once you have decided what type of video you plan to make, click the appropriate button and click record.
    • The webcam will start recording after a few peeping sounds. You may want to be be ready to pause it at the bottom left corner to get yourself ready or you may have the deer in the headlight look!

**The first video it will ask you if you want a tour. You can decide if you want to take the tour or skip to get started recording.

Making a Video in Screencastify

  • Controls are at the bottom of the screen
  • Right side are the controls for saving the video
  • You can Trash the video and start over with the trash can in the red area across the top

Saving Video in Screencastify

  • Share Tab: You are suppose to be able to share it to Google Classroom, Youtube or embed. I have not had a lot of success in those working.
  • Download:
    • Click Download button and it will send the video to the download folder on your computer or chromebook.
  • Remember that a copy of the video can also be found in your Google Drive in the Screencastify Folder.

Setting Up YouTube Channel

  • You have a YouTube Channel that is connected to your school email account but probably has never been set up so here we go!
  • Go to YouTube and in the top right corner click on the Camera Icon
  • You will need to set up your channel for the first time
  • Set up Screens
    • Your Creator Journey Begins - Click Get Started
    • Choose how to create your Channel - Your Name - Select
    • Go to the bottom of the screen and select Set Up later

Uploading First Video

  • Your channel should be set up now. You will click on the camera icon again and select Upload Video
  • Explore the New YouTube Studio click Got it
  • Upload Screen click Select File

  • After clicking on Select File - Find the location of the download
    • Chromebook - The download will be in the download folder
    • Laptop - The file should be in the download folder on the desktop
  • Select the correct file and then click Open
  • Now you have to set the Rights for each video you upload
  • This next step is SUPER IMPORTANT if you are doing a read aloud to stay within copyright laws.

  • Title: Name your video
  • Description: Gives the students an idea of what the video is about

  • Required: Have to answer whether for Kids or Not
    • If for Kids - No one can comment
    • If Not for Kids - You have more options about comments

  • Continue to scroll down to find these options if you selected Not for Kids……
  • You can check for other settings that you might want to implement
  • Comments and Ratings
    • Allow Comments
    • Hold potentially inappropriate comments for review
    • Hold all comments for review
    • Disable Comments

  • Click Blue Next at Bottom right
  • Step 2 - No changes needed to this screen - Click Blue Next Button
  • The Next Step is the most important so Watch Carefully what you are doing!

  • This next step is the most important when it comes time to follow copyright if you are doing a read aloud.
  • Select UNLISTED
    • Public - Everyone can see your video
    • Unlisted - Only people with the link
    • Private - Only you and people you select to see it
  • Click the Blue Save Button

Copy the Link & Share

  • You have made it to the end!
  • Copy the Link by clicking on the double sheets of papers
  • You can then paste the link wherever it is needed by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL V

FYI

  • Screencastify only allows 5 minute videos
  • You can make your videos public if it is just instructions and you want more people to have access.
  • It should work on Chromebooks and Laptops.
  • After the set up, the steps are much easier.
  • The videos will show you how to record videos and upload them to youtube once your channel is set up.
