ISAM Overview

2

Our project is part of the COSMIC Space Consortium In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM) design challenge. As a part of the challenge, we MUST generate an ISAM idea and then create a design that can perform three continual ISAM actions.Examples of ISAM:-Assembling a satellite in space-Manufacturing fiber optics-Repairing satellites in orbit

Management Style

Our team has weekly joint meetings to discuss individual progress and how the team is progressing towards weekly goals. At these meetings we break down tasks for the upcoming week and collaborate on the weekly lightning talk presentation.

Project Endstate

By the end of the COSMIC space challenge we will have created a design that can perform three continuous actions related to ISAM capabilities. Our final design must fit the BCT X-Sat Venus Class bus.

Key risks and risk mitigation strategies

What are the biggest threats to our project?

Risks

Scope Creep:

“Continuous or uncontrolled growth in a project's scope, at any point after the project begins”

With our project being broad and largely up to the team to define how we will solve complex problems, naturally we will encounter scope creep. If unmanaged scope creep can cost us time and energy necessary for improvement of the project.

Referencing COSMIC C3 Given Information:

Design Requirements:

  • Demonstrates 3 or more operations in ISAM
  • Autonomous or limited control
  • Fits BCT X-Sat Venus Class Bus Satellite

Deliverables:

  • CAD model of design with animation
  • Design technical drawings and BOM
  • Design Report and Presentation

Conclusion

What will we accomplish from having a more defined set of project plans?

Takeaways

    • A well managed project will enable the team to have a clear set of objectives and naturally progress towards deadlines.
    • Without defined objectives and roles, our project inevitably face scope creep. By relying on our Gantt chart we can develop consistency of progress.
    • Having individual roles on the team will allow each member to take ownership of certain tasks on the team. Guaranteeing their completion.
