As we performed testing, we discovered a recurring pattern with our animations in the new prototype. Today we are highlighting the use of animations as a key finding.

According to NNG:

Animated user interface elements can easily waste a precious currency: users’ attention and time. We know that employing animations sparingly when they add meaning to the interaction is the most advantageous use of animations. On the other hand, gratuitous animations that are repeatedly encountered can present content roadblocks and can lengthen the amount of time to complete a task.

I wanted to present a case demonstrating a successful and unsuccessful use of animations.

We see that in Figure A the success area is at the bottom left of the screen outlined in green, and we see over half of our clicks occur in the area outlined in red – which is the animated area. In figure B we see the success area outlined in green with a high rate of clicks in that area. In both instances, users were drawn toward the animation. However, in Figure B, the animation was appropriated in such a way that increased task success rate. These examples illustrate how animations can be helpful when used appropriately.

We are working to determine appropriateness of the animations in the new prototype by testing and following the data.
