The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is. It’s to imagine what is possible.

You better help others collect... You are the person who is responsible for saving your culture. Not the Met, not the Whitney, not the MoMA, but you.
–David Driskell
Commissioner started in 2017 with a central question:How can we help more locals support artists and collect art in their cities?
In 2018, we launched:A membership program that provides locals with access, relationships, and knowledge to collect works by some of the most gifted contemporary visual artists in their communities.
We commission new works, offer programming and share stories that lower barriers to supporting artists and collecting art.
If all of us, and not just a handful, become stewards of our own stories through collecting art, we see a future twenty years from now where works will be present in both our flagship museums and on our living room walls. They will say, “A generation of locals came together to uplift the work of Miami artists reflecting on the many stories of their communities.”

There are two kinds of memberships, and now, more ways to participate….

Artists we commission
With curatorial partner Primary, here are some guiding questions that inform artist commissions: - Is the artist based in Miami?- Is the artist committed to pursuing their career?- Does their practice have rigor? - Is the artist at an inflection point in their practice?- How will this commission advance their practice or goals?- Is there interest in engaging community beyond commercial sales?- How is the artist adding to a broader conversation?
