Problem or Challenge

*Second grade students struggle with many comprehension and Reading skills.

*68% of those second grade students scored at a Novice level on the Fall Star Reading Assessment

*Virtual learning had a direct impact on their foundational Reading development.

Standard to be addressed:

RF.2.4 Read fluently (accuracy, speed and prosody) on grade-level to support comprehension.

a. Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.

b. Orally read grade-level text fluently on successive readings.

c. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

Responses: “ Sounded out words is really hard”, Sometimes I have trouble with the mixing my letter sounds up”, “ The heart words are the worst”, “ The long words are the hardest, oh and the heart words”, “ Trying to sound out the words and then I forget what I read”, “ The heart words are the hardest words and I don’t remember easily. “

Reading for Meaning is a strategy that breaks reading into three phases (before, during, and after reading) and develops in students of all ages the processing skills they need during each phase to build deep understanding.

  Question: How will teaching my students to use the Reading for Meaning tools affect their ability to comprehend a text?

*Daily formative assessment data, including fluency charts and retells

If it's true that a specific tool aids student’s comprehension then I would expect that the Reading for Meaning tool will increase student achievement and decrease the number of students scoring Novice on the Star assessment.

Goal

  The goal of my study is to see whether the Reading for Meaning tool affects student’s Reading comprehension.
