Purpose of Academy

  • The Music Academy at KGV offers extension opportunities for our gifted and talented musicians, with a holistic programme that will allow them to reach their full potential. We would like our musicians to leave KGV with the experiences and skills that will prepare them for a tertiary education in Music or to succeed in a professional setting if they were to chose such as path.
  • Students selected to be part of the Music Academy programme will have access to specialist instruction that is only available to the Academy cohort. Examples include ensemble training and masterclasses with professional musicians, learning a second instrument, excursions/tours, and also community engagement projects.
  • In Year 8, KGV students normally choose three art subjects out of Music, Drama, Media, and Art. However, Music Academy students will only focus on Music (they will not take drama, media, and art) to give them the opportunity to fully take advantage of the accelerated curriculum.
  • Music Academy students will get the option to continue being part of the select group in Year 9, iGCSE, and beyond. The Music Academy is targeted at students who learn an instrument/singing outside school and are keen to further develop their musicianship in an individualised learning programme.
  • Feel free to contact Ms Alexandra Carlile (alexandra.carlile@kgv.edu.hk) for more information.

  • 2) Honesty – Students will show high levels of honesty with themselves and their own preparation, practice and performance. This includes being honest with their efforts in the classroom and in performance.
  • 3) Resilience – Students will show high levels of resilience through reflection on performance and strategy to improve.

Q&A:

  • Are there any opportunities for vocal performance or training in this program?

Yes, we will look at the interests of the students that sign up, and adapt our bespoke program accordingly, We will look at masterclasses from visiting professionals, excursions, concerts and pre-concert talks, singing technique development, community choral and solo singing opportunities. The Music Department has connections with the HKAPA vocal faculty and we are forming links with professionals there.

  • The three other Arts subjects (Art, Drama Media) will be dropped when students join the Music Academy in year 8. What happens when students move up to year 9?

Students will have the opportunity to continue in the Music Academy in year 9, or choose 2 Arts subjects (either Music or Drama, and Art or Media (one visual and one performing).

  • Is it a must to drop 3 other art subjects? If there is one subject that the student particular like, is it okay to keep one?

In the current model we have then yes, the students will drop the other three subjects. We understand that this might mean that students miss out on other subjects but this is to facilitate a more in-depth engagement with the academy program.

  • How many people will be chosen for the program?

We are aiming for a small size class, between 20-25 year 8 students, starting this August 2023

  • Will the Music Academy limit my subject choices as I move up the school?

In year 9, students can continue on with the Music Academy, or choose 2 Arts subjects (1 performing / 1 visual) alongside the rest of the year group.

Year 10-11, students will have the full range of GCSE subject choices as those not in the Music Academy, If students choose music as one of their subjects choices, there will be a Music Academy group, that will run alongside the mainstream IGCSE Music group.
