Notes on Earth’s Layers
Scientists analyze earthquake waves (also called seismic waves) to study Earth’s interior.
The vibrations produced by an earthquake are called seismic waves.
Different layers of the Earth formed due to differences in the density of the materials.
The Moho layer of the Earth is the boundary between the crust and the mantle.
The layer that makes up most of the Earth’s mass and volume is the mantle.
Scientists believe that differences in density cause hot, plastic rock in the asthenosphere to rise toward Earth’s crust.

The force of gravity gave Earth its spherical shape.
The strength of the gravitational pull between two objects is affected by mass and distance.
The greater mass an object has, the stronger the gravitational force.
