Viruses and Bacteria

WarmUps Notes and Tasks

How has the development of society influenced the evolution and success of microbes? How do viruses and bacteria differ in their ability to grow and disrupt homeostasis?

Wednesday Week 1 WarmUp: Choose 2-3 prompts, fill your warmup box.

  1. What do you know about viruses? Bacteria? Other microbes? Where have you learned about them before? What questions do you have?
  2. What do you want the teacher to know about you and your learning? How do you learn best? What gets in the way of your learning?
  3. What are your goals this quarter? What will you do differently this quarter? The same? What were you most successful at last quarter? Why do you think this is so?

Science Language: structure, function, mechanisms of growth, disease, infection, types of microbes

Wednesday MINILesson: What are microbes?

  1. Microbes are microscopic biological organisms.
  2. They grow, reproduce, and mutate rapidly.
  3. Microbes that have the potential to cause infectious disease are called pathogens
  4. An infection is the invasion and multiplication of pathogenic microbes in an individual or population.
  5. Disease is when the infection causes damage to the individual’s vital functions or systems.
  6. There are 5 types of microbes:

Bacteria - Viruses - Protozoa - Algae - Fungus

Task: Analyze and Interpret Data by Making a Model (Chart) in order to draw conclusions about microbes (structure/function)

  1. Create a poster chart about one of five microbes, work with a partner or by yourself:
  2. Viruses, Bacteria, Protozoa, Fungi, Algae
  3. In your chart, you should include:
    • Structure diagram with 5 labels
    • Characteristics: describe it, how does it work, examples. 3 bullets
    • Definition + put in your own words (In other words…)
  4. Then choose 1 other subject area to expand on your microbe:
    • History: Research and summarize (2-3 sentences) a historical event involving the microbe
    • Math: Research 2 statistics or Graphs and finish the thought starter: This data shows… OR One reason for this trend/pattern could be…
    • Language Arts: cite 2 quotes from a recent article about your microbe and finish the following thought starter: This is interesting because… OR This shows...
  5. Use the links provided on Ms Friedrichs blog to help you get started.

  2. Based on what you heard/saw yesterday what do you think Ms Friedrich values in her classroom? From her students?
  3. What expectations do you have from the teacher of this class? What about your classmates?
