Today’s Discussion

4 of 31

MARS was founded in March 2019 and since then, has been continuously working to make the lives of the street dogs better and safer.

MARS arose out of the desire of founder, Sarah Iyer, wanting to help the animals that she saw. While others only did rescues with a few animals, Sarah wanted to do more. She has done more than 500 rescues and has personally financed over 200 sterilizations in and around her area. Over 90% of the bills were paid for personally. She continues to pay for the treatment for the animals from her own pocket.

From just feeding the dogs on the street to creating a trust to help the animals in a bigger way, soon people heard of her work and began asking for help with rescuing and sterilizing street dogs beyond what Sarah could manage alone.

In order to help more dogs, Sarah soon realised she needed resources and a system in place to help the communities. Over time, what began as a WhatsApp group of around 150 volunteers, evolved into the Madras Animal Rescue Society that exists today.

I am Sarah Iyer, founder of the Trust called M.A.R.S (Madras Animal Rescue Society). We are a group consisting of 80 plus individuals who rescue injured street dogs and other animals in distress, and provide for their rehabilitation expenses out of our own pockets. We also vaccinate, spay/neuter dogs and cats at our own expense. We have been doing this for the last two years. Each group member also feeds dogs in their own localities.

We are a collective of passionate people who want the best for these defenseless animals. We would be extremely grateful if you could help us achieve our goal in giving every animal a chance of life. We all try our best to do our own bit, but unfortunately, that is still insufficient.

80%

OF STREET DOGS IN CHENNAI ARE SERIOUSLY INJURED

Many of the dogs MARS helps in the shelter houses are old, blind paraplegic dogs that cannot survive on the streets by themselves. When they are found, some are in horrific condition. These are a few of the miracles witnessed by MARS.
