Dual Language Program

What is Dual Language?

  • The Dual Language Program is a form of bilingual education in which students are taught literacy and academic content in two languages. It offers a unique opportunity for students to excel academically and learn a second language. Dual language programs foster: bilingualism, bi-literacy, enhanced awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, and high levels of academic achievement through instruction in two languages.

47 of 56

Benefits of the Dual Language Program

  • Students develop proficiency in two languages.
  • Students perform as well as or better than their peers in non-dual language classrooms.
  • All students develop a positive sense of self and multicultural competencies.
  • Students also develop intercultural and global competence that prepares them to succeed in today’s increasingly competitive global society.

School District U-46 ELL Department Dual Language High School Implementation SY 2020-21

Being multilingual and multi-literate are just as fundamental to a student’s education as is a solid foundation in science, mathematics, and the arts. It is no longer acceptable to regard a second language as an add-on, rather than a core component of a basic education.

-Chris Livaccari (AsiaSociety.org from New Ways of Seeing:  How Multilingualism Opens Our Eyes and Trains Our Minds for a Complex World, March 2017)

Distrito Escolar U-46 Departamento de ELLLenguaje Dual Implementación en la Escuela Superior

Curso Escolar 2020-21

Ser multilingüe y multi-letrado son tan fundamentales para la educación de los estudiantes como tener una base sólida en ciencias, matemáticas y las artes. No se puede aceptar más el considerar un segundo idioma como un añadido, sino como un componente central de la educación básica.

-Chris Livaccari (AsiaSociety.org from New Ways of Seeing:  How Multilingualism Opens Our Eyes and Trains Our Minds for a Complex World, March 2017)
