A strong foundation to start sets one up for a strong foundation to finish ... offering your child a brilliant basketball beginning ...

NW Headstart Basketball is a one-of-a-kind development program which provides a unique training module designed to accelerate athletic and fundamental skill development for scholar athletes.

Below are concepts on what we teach headstart basketball players. We break it down between 3 levels. As players perfect each level, they can advance to the next level to learn more skills & concepts.

Depending on the age and skill level, players will progress through the levels at different rates. You may notice that we’ll spend a couple years working on Level 1 with k -1st grade. At the same time, we may be able to progress to Level 2 after two weeks working with a group of 2nd & 3rd graders who are playing basketball for the first time.

Each season we would start at Level 1. Players , if they have been with us just progress through the levels more quickly than the newer , younger players . It’s a great way to ingrain the fundamentals into players year in and year out.

It may take a few years to teach all of these skills at one level and THAT’S OKAY! For youth players, we want to focus on the long-term development, not how many games they win when they’re k-3rd . If you try to progress them too quickly, it will hurt them in the long-run. You want to have a solid foundation first. We wouldn’t try to teach them every dribble move in one year or every option in the motion offense. The same way in which you couldn’t teach a person calculus if they did not know how to do simple addition and subtraction.

Here’s what is taught, ordered by priority:

Lay Ups – the goal is to get all players to make lay ups with their left and right hands equally well!! Players are taught to jump off the proper foot. They should jump off the left leg when shooting a right hand lay up. They should shoot off their right leg when shooting a left hand lay up. They should dribble with their left hand when shooting left hand lay ups. And vice versa.

Footwork – teach them triple threat positioning, pivoting on their left and right foot without traveling, jump stops, and to square to the basket as soon as they catch the ball in a triple threat position. A lot of time will be spent on footwork!

Shooting Form – for this age group, instead of using smaller balls and lower baskets, players will be allowed to dip their elbows which will give them more strength.

Ball Handling – players will be taught to dribble with left and right hands equally. Basic dribble moves such as the speed dribble, crossover, protect-the-ball dribble, and back-off dribble.

Athletic & Movement Skills – teach them how to run, jump and land, skip, stop, move laterally, squat, lunge and any other basic movements. Basic passes – teach and practice the basic chest, bounce, and overhead passes. Offense – start to introduce motion offense. Defense – teach the basic stance, defensive slide, and basic off-ball principles

Magic Select Program is for players in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade. The focus is on building a solid fundamental foundation for the players to build upon as they get older and higher in the program. The program is segmented seasonally to allow players to continue to be multi-sport athletes for as long as possible.

The NW Magic Select Program focuses on teaching young athletes who possess a passion for the game and a strong desire to develop the opportunity to improve their individual fundamental basketball skills. Through the NW Magic basketball select program, your player will develop skills necessary to succeed as a high school athlete. NW Magic focuses on teamwork, attitude, and commitment while teaching strong fundamentals and assertive play.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

The program thrives because we develop fundamental skills and basketball IQ. Magic meets the players where s/he is and builds to the player’s full capacity. This model is extremely successful regardless of the player’s beginning level.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Magic select teams will begin tournament play in 3rd grade. The tournament schedule is heavier in the winter and spring with an emphasis on training and 3 on 3’s in summer and fall.

TRYOUTS/TEAM ROSTERS

Magic will host tryouts for our select program teams in September & February. The goal is to build the most competitive teams possible and to ensure players are properly placed according to skill set, experience, age, and position. All teams will carry 10-12 players and practice will be held during the week and some weekends.

. The NW Magic Rising Basketball Program

NW Magic Basketball Rising program focuses on building the aerobic base, building strength, and further developing the overall basketball skills. Also, there is a focus on building the “engine” and consolidating basketball skills. Early in the level, 60% of the time is spent on individual training and 40% is spent on competition including 5x5 play, special games (1x1, 2x2, 3x3, skill games) as well as team-oriented practices. Later in the level, depending on mastery of skills, the switch will be made to a 50:50 training to competition ratio.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

NW Magic will prepare Rising Basketball players for the Next Level of Basketball through practices, games, and tournaments throughout the year. These practices, games, & tournaments will emulate next level for the purpose of preparation of transferable skills & play.

TRYOUTS/TEAM ROSTERS

Magic will host tryouts for our Rising program teams in September & again in February (to fill roster spots). The goal is to build the most competitive teams possible and to ensure players are properly placed according to skill set, experience, age, and position. All teams will carry 8-10 players and practice will be held during the week and some weekends.
