Graphic design is a form of visual communication. It is the process of creating visual messages using typography, images, and layout. It is a form of communication that can be used to convey a wide range of messages, from branding and marketing to information graphics and web design.

Task 1

Use the Internet to find examples of graphic communication for each of the following elements of design:

Present each example with a short explanation of why you selected it to illustrate that specific element.

Task 2

Photograph examples of graphic communication in your home or in your local area. Present an example of each of the following:

An advertisement, signage, a logo, a label, a map, a diagram, instructional graphics.

For one of the categories present what you consider to be a good example of graphic communication. Find an example of something you feel is not a successful example (from the same category) and add notes comparing the designs.

Task 3

Look at some examples of famous brand logos.

Create a logo for an imaginary clothing brand called ‘Trend Tonic’.

This brand is aimed at a young consumer with similar interests to yourself. Decide on which of the logo styles you will design lettermark, wordmark, image symbol or combined mark.

Choose a limited colour palette and consider the fact that the logo will need to be produced in a variety sizes (small label / large billboard) so fine details might get lost in production.

Begin by sketching some ideas by hand. You can produce the logo using artistic materials or digital editing.

Present your logo with comments on your ideas for the design.
